Left 4 Dead User Created Content Compatible With The Sequel

Mods are this important to the L4D community!

If you're one of the many Left 4 Dead users on the PC that have shared your awesome mod talents, Left 4 Dead 2 will not mark the end of your hard work. Valve recently assured users that their user-created content will be available "out of the box" with the release of Left 4 Dead 2. That is to say, while playing Left 4 Dead 2, all of your hand-made maps will be there for the new sequel! To us, this is more what you might expect from community-friendly developer, Valve.

Chet Faliszek, project lead with Valve, sat down with Kikizo.com for a little reassurance session.

"For modders, everything they make in Left 4 Dead will work in Left 4 Dead 2," Chet revealed during a recent London preview event. "It'll work better if they bring it into Left 4 Dead 2 and recompile it for Left 4 Dead 2, using some of the additions we've made, but it'll work out of the box as well. We just want to make sure that anyone who's making a mod now knows that their time's going to be well spent."

Valve appears to be working hard on bridging both of the games so no one feels left out of the bunch. Ongoing DLC support for L4D was the first step, connecting modders from one game to the next is another. Hopefully we'll be hearing more about further compatibility between L4D 1 and 2!

this makes me a bit jealous of PC. they should port some of the good mods to xbox 360

is L4D2 running on the same engine? it sure sounds like it considering the short time line and backwards compatibility.

As always I'm glad I grabbed the PC version of a Valve game. and I'll continue to do so.

As I've always said, if you're playing a Valve game on anything other than a PC, you're doing it wrong.

That's my one biggest love of PC stuff over Xbox... there are so many more mods and maps for most of the PC games. And, there are a number of mappers out there that should work for the game companies... they make stuff that is at LEAST on par with the released stuff.

way to rub it in my face . i always used to be a PC gamer until my wife (girlfriend at the time) showed interest in gaming. for various reasons, i'm only playing xbox 360 now and the user content and mods are really the only things i miss. gaming with a partner is definitely works better on a console. i'm not about to keep 2 gaming rigs up to date. i don't have that kind of money or time.

Ok, so what would prevent Valve from releasing new campaigns afterwards, that would work with both the original game and the sequel for Xbox 360 ?

@Armor Biff - The Director Engine has been upgraded in the sequel to allow for much more varied environmental, pathing, and enemy effects. In order for Valve to release a new campaign that works on both titles, it would have to be designed statically for the original game, and dynamically for the world-randomizer in the sequel.

I don't think it's very likely we'll see new content released for both platforms, but I'm *very* glad they're bridging the gaps from the first to the second.
