Aliens Colonial Marines Fate Depends on AvP

Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo August 25th, 2009 at 8:30 AM

The fate of the four player co-op game, Aliens: Colonial Marines, hinges on the success of another game that just so happens to have a co-op mode; Aliens versus Predator.  So while the Gearbox developed Colonial Marines, a title with a promised four player cooperative campaign was announced first, it's the latter game with the add-on survival mode that will decide when, and possibly if, Colonial Marines ships.

"I think the detail of that [release date] is probably still too early," Sega President Mike Hayes told G4TV. "What I would say is it's unlikely that we'd launch anything within six months [after Aliens vs. Predator], but probably nine months, eight to 12 months possibly. Though we literally are looking at that at the moment and a lot of is going to depend, as well, on how successful AvP  is at the box [retail]."

According to Sega they've received more feedback from the community on AvP than any other upcoming title.  I guess people finally gave up on a good Sonic game.

I suppose they are testing the success of an Alien type game, rather than testing for the success of a co-op game.

A real shame, I don't care about AvP, but colonial marines I wanted.

Its a good thing I plan on picking up AvP. Now I can personally help Colonial Marines come out!

You're misinterpreting the quote, Nicholas. In no way did Mike Hayes even imply that Sega was considering Colonial Marines' cancellation. He merely stated that depending on the success of AVP, Colonial Marines could either be released as quickly as six months after launch or be delayed as long as another year.

My thoughts exactly. I have no interest at all in the AvP game. I am REALLY interested in the colonial marines game.

Why dont they release Colonial Marines first and gague releasing AvP on Marines success? I like that idea better.

Also decyx,
Even if its only affecting how quickly it releases, it seems to me that the more a game gets delayed, the more likely it is to be killed off.

Heres to hoping we still get Colonial Marines and that its as good as we all hope it is.

he may not have said it but usually when a release date gets pushed that far, its a thin line from being canceled all together. nick may be speculating but that's a pretty reasonable speculation.

Hmm... guess I'll have to add AvP to the list of gifts to give the nephew. Not interested in it myself, but damn am I looking forward to Colonial Marines (was looking forward to...?)

I'd be down for playing BOTH of these - but to be honest, I'd rather see Colonial Marines make an appearance first. Oh, well.

bapenguin at 08:53 AM on 8.25.2009
I'm merely speculating. If AvP bombs hard, you can bet Gearbox and Sega won't be dumping more money into the project.

Mrxknown_JG at 08:58 AM on 8.25.2009
I take it AvP isn't co-op I thought it was for some reason.

Well, hopefully Colonial Marines gets its shot cause I'd hate to think we won't be seeing posts of "It's game over, man" here anymore.

smurphster at 09:07 AM on 8.25.2009

i thought its survival mode was?

blakepro at 09:24 AM on 8.25.2009

Yes, thats what I heard too. the survival mode is.

bapenguin at 09:25 AM on 8.25.2009
It mentions the survival mode right in the article above.

txshurricane at 10:18 AM on 8.25.2009

Really? So, basically, you're taking that as a solid promise to have Colonial Marines in your hands a year after AvP? I mean, because development plans never change, right?

Sorry, dude, but speculation is given where speculation is due. This quote gives hope that the game is even going to stay alive...it does not guarantee anything.

decyx at 05:43 PM on 8.25.2009
I'm not taking it as a solid promise at all, txshurricane; I'm merely taking Mike's words at face value for the moment. Call me optimistic, I guess.

Also, I want to apologize to Nicholas if I came off as rude. That really wasn't my intention. I was just alarmed when I first read the article this morning (as probably most people would be if they were informed that a game they were highly anticipating could be canceled) only to realize after reading the quote that you were simply speculating.

I would hope that Alien vs Pred would sell on name alone. Personally, I am not too fussed, but 4 player co-op would be great.

BigBadBob113 at 02:31 AM on 8.26.2009
As I had mentioned in a previous post, I loved AvP on the Jaguar back in the day. Its a really neat concept, and has such a high replay value simply because there are three campaigns to go through (Aliens, Colonial Marines, and Predator.) Plus you throw in the multiplayer survival mode, and you have yourself one solid game for the Alien/Predator fan, or just SciFi fan in general.

Im just thanking the gaming gods that the game has absolutely nothing to do with the horrible AvP films...what blasphemy...

txshurricane at 05:59 AM on 8.26.2009

It was sarcasm; I gave you the benefit of the doubt, even though I disagreed with you.
