How The Borderlands Pre-Order Guns Work

Katrina "ShadokatRegn" Pawlowski October 9th, 2009 at 10:07 PM

After our rant against Exclusive content it seems one developer was on-top of making things a bit more fair. Borderlands developer Gearbox will be releasing 8 guns for those who pre-order the game, only with a happy co-op ending this time.

The exclusive pre-order from Gamestop for Borderlands has two things going for it, one involves co-op while the other is just a bit of hard work. In Borderlands there will be a lot of bartering for things in co-op, and the per-order code for the 8 exclusive guns covers any new character you wish to make. That way, you can make a new character and trade your 8 guns to a friend in co-op (or, 8 friends with different shooting-style preferences) then play with your preferred character who also has all the guns.

"According to Gearbox, each new character you create will have these guns, and there's no limit to who you give them to. So, theoretically, you could create a bunch of starter characters and dole out the weapons to friends that didn't pre-order the game."

Since Borderlands focus is on guns, thousands of them in fact, you will do a lot of gun-searching while playing. These 8 guns: pistol, shot gun, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, assault rifle, etc will be somewhere in the realm of Borderlands. The downside here is: They may be difficult to find amongst the plethora of other gun options through the game.

Both of these options make this exclusive in-game content pack our favorite to date: The incentive to pre-order is there for those that can't live without the 8 special guns, while still giving those of us who can't pre-order because of monetary restrictions or other reasons the option to play with these in-game weapons. Special bonus to Gearbox for encouraging the co-op trading system with this pre-order.

What do you think of this type of pre-order exclusive? Better, worse, or no different than things like The Juggernaut Pre-order exclusive?

ong_elvin at 05:26 PM on 10.9.2009
I approve of this pre-order bonus since nobody is explicitly excluded from it.

So, I can find these weapons in the game? Kudos, Gearbox! Thanks for not screwing over people like me!

I like a challenge... (Riddick from Dark Athena )

Sounds great! This way, my bro (who's going to co-op w/ me) and I can both take advantage of my preorder bonus so that I don't have undo "advantage" over, although we are pretty good about sharing loot. Kudos! to Gearbox on this game. They have gone above and beyond the Call of Duty with this one. With propietary software for allowing co-op, persistent characters, and specializing PC menues Gearbox has really pulled out the stops to give gamers what they have been asking for.

I'll hold off my excitement on the pre-order bonus until I see what guns we get.

Essentially every randomly-generated gun in Gearbox's game will be special, so 8 extras? I dunno, they gotta be something special or they're just eight guns in a room full of thousands of guns.

I just hope I don't find replacements for them in the first few minutes of the game. Or maybe I do... hmm.

my thoughts exactly... 8 "special" guns in a world of 87 bazillion guns? woopdee doo. my hatred of gamestop wins out on this one. i'm happier without the guns and not supporting an evil corporation.

they'll probably be like the pre order bonus for too human, and make them slightly higher level so that they're better then what you're likely to find in the starting area. Just a bit of upped gear to make the game begin smoother.

HobocidalManiac at 10:23 AM on 10.10.2009
One's called the "Angry Shotgun." That's almost worth preordering for. But I might end up getting it for PC, so no guns for me

SwissyJim at 10:44 AM on 10.10.2009
yea, I think this is the ultra rare dual platform purchase for me. I love the looks of this, and I have co-op friends that one each.

Agentfyre at 01:34 PM on 10.10.2009
Mine's already pre-ordered, but that's cuz I turned in a ton of old games to do so.

As for PC, can't you pre-order for PC as well? You don't HAVE to use Steam. Not that Gamestop is any better though.

Either way, this game will be a blast. I really can't wait. I keep going through these moments where I swear it's coming this tuesday, but then I remember it's not...

Syphous at 02:37 PM on 10.10.2009
I'm all for pre-order exclusives in general. So being able to share them with everyone else? That's even cooler.

Shazoo at 02:57 PM on 10.10.2009
wow thats amazing, so amazing I'm actually going to preorder the game now most likely...

slhunter at 02:59 PM on 10.10.2009
Isn't collecting the weapons part of the fun in the first place? Maybe that's just me...

Syphous at 03:31 PM on 10.10.2009
slhunter, last count was like 17.5 million weapons. I don't think 8 are going to ruin the gun-hunt.

Agentfyre at 05:01 PM on 10.10.2009
Definitely not, but still, being able to share them is a nice touch. I guess it's not a stretch considering they could be "found," too.

Zonf86 at 11:56 PM on 10.11.2009
CO-op is even ingrained with the pre-order rewards. Good work Gearbox!

Biohzrd451 at 02:30 AM on 10.12.2009
Very cool that they made it to where you can share with friends. The only reason I really preorder from Gamestop is I don't have a real option of where to get my games from .

Brainp0wa at 04:19 AM on 10.14.2009
Too bad the splitscreen online co-op is still a "maybe" as I would have pre-ordered the game for sure. Now I will rent it first.

Rbp-7-(Ooz) at 07:41 AM on 10.28.2009
@ong_elvin There is one group of people excluded. PC owners. The pre-order weapons are for Concole owners only.

@smurphster is there room on your Gamestop hate couch?

smurphster at 07:46 AM on 10.28.2009

probably... so far i think its me and kat, maybe a few others. we can always get a bigger couch

ShadokatRegn at 07:47 AM on 10.28.2009

Or a room full of couches. That isn't fair about the PC exclusion.

Agentfyre at 08:14 AM on 10.28.2009
I don't like Gamestop either, but I still use them sometimes. At least for trading in old games and systems.

Rbp-7-(Ooz) at 09:38 AM on 10.28.2009
And it's not like PC users can get around it by trading guns with Console users because of 'no cross-platform network compatibility'.

That is what I really want... (I can get passed missing 8 guns...) the closest you can get to even playing the game with Console users vs. PC users is 4 players on a PC network and some of them have Xbox controllers plugged in instead of Keyboard & mouse....

Oh well.

much better than playing two-player games in the old Intellivision right?

Hopefully folks had fun. Got quite a few matches in, but I'm signing off for the night.
