Microsoft Store Prints Games on Demand

News
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

Along with the launch of Windows 7 last week, Microsoft launched another huge initiative - retail stores.  Much like Apple does with their stores, Microsoft wants users to have a one stop shop for everything under the MS brand including PC and Xbox video games.  In fact, you can actually bring your Xbox into one for service should you find yourself with one of those dreaded errors.

There's another interesting thing that launched with the store, and that's games on demand printing for Games for Windows titles.  You simply use a kiosk to select the game from the entire catalog, and the system will print you a brand new copy including the manual, boxart and case.  The whole process takes about five minutes, and it makes me wonder why something like this wasn't in place sooner for PC gaming.  It'll be that much easier to get yourself and a friend a copy of Dawn of War 2.

In fact, why hasn't someone created an entire retail kiosk chain on this concept?

Hmm. Interesting. This is good news for collectors who lke having a hard copy about. It also means a game never has to go out of print. I doubt a keosk chain would work, but it would be good to have around for serious gamers.

This is actually a smart move. Not only can you snag rare or out of print games for a MSRP price (unlike the ridiculous prices for rare games such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 used to be before it was released on XBLA/PSN), but I also like the idea that you can bring your system to them if something happens.

One of the reasons I chose the PS3 over the 360 was due to the extremely high chances of the 360 breaking, and me being without games for several weeks. Had there been MS stores that would handle the repair process at the time (thus significantly lowering the down time of broken systems) I would have been extremely more likely to pick the 360 over the PS3.

How many of these stores are they opening? Of all the malls Ive been to here in NY, I have only seen two Apple stores, so Im expecting that there are even less MS stores.

This news intrigues me. But it's not going to come to Australia I bet.

Probley won't come to the UK either. However, as bob said, it's a good long term move for game fans like myself, assuming they will print games from any region, because there will be no more £100 copies of rare game x.

I'd love to see sony do this. Future Cop, Rachet Size Matters ect, all games I want but are hard to find in decent condition for a good price. Give these guys a bell and in a few days you have a fresh litrally new copy of the game.

Would be really sweet to see a MS store come near where I live, would go out of my way to get my 360 fixed if the turn around was a few days.

You know what REALLY needs to happen? Microsoft should print Xbox Live Arcade disks. Go to a store, pick out any of the games you want from Xbox Live Arcade, and it will print the full versions on a disk for you to take home. Just pay the total. Skip the MS points and even have a disk you can trade in some day.

what would be really cool is if they could give you a loaner while yours is being fixed.

Expand the market of Used games with current download-only games? I highly doubt MS would do that. They would risk having people buy used copies rather than get the money to MS.

I personally don't care about the 360's repair issues. Yes it's bad and the next generation should be more stable. But as long as they will pay for my repair costs, I'm fine waiting a few weeks. I had to do it twice before. Although the first time I got it back within a week.

It helps to remind me that I could actually go outside and have fun

I dunno, this reminds me of the Dell stores and we all know what happened to them.
