Twelve Minutes of Dead Island Gameplay Footage

We've seen the trailers, both of them.  But what about the gameplay?  Is Dead Island going to be a moody survival horror game, an action-packed race to safe houses, or something else entirely?  The following video has some answers for us.  Dead Island's gameplay is looking more like Fallout 3 than Resident Evil or Left 4 Dead.  You'll meet up with NPC's, repair your weapons, and numbers will spray from your enemies as you damage them.  You'll also see different enemy types as well as get a sense of scale for the island of Banoi (it's big enough to incorporate a fast-travel system). The video shows only single player footage, but we can get a good idea of where things are going from here.  It looks like consoles may finally get a giant open world action RPG that supports cooperative play.

Dead Island is scheduled for a fall release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or PC.  The game will support four player online co-op, which we are hoping to see in action at E3.

What do you think of the gameplay footage?  Is this what you were expecting?  Are you excited by the gameplay, or disappointed?

The leg animations look like Gumby - but it loooks good. I like the slower rpg feel of it. Like Oblivion with zombies.

Some of it looks really innovative. But the visuals are nothing new. I like the inclusion of vehicles - seems like a lot of environmental interaction.

Looks good but looks like they need to do some tweaking on the movement and stuff looks really twitchy.

hope they do a good job of this. it doesnt look like there's any dialog options, and accepting a quest or not was just a matter of selecting yes or no, which is a shame. i always loved the different ways you could take on a quest in fallout. even so, if the quests are varied and the game isnt broken, its gonna be awesome in co-op

I'm really disappointed there's no offline couch co-op... why is this so hard in this day and age? My wife and I love to play together, why should we need two LAN'd systems to do so... big letdown for a game I was looking forward to.

In response to KingKrikkit, I can tell you it's incredibly difficult to do split screen and retain any semblence of the original graphics in modern games. A few years ago, it wasn't such a big deal, as the games weren't pushing the 360 to it's limits, but in this day and age, the 360, and to a lesser extent the PS3 is being pushed to it's boundaries.

To include off-line splitscreen, you are quite literally doubling what the console has to render. The offset to this is to cut players off so they can't backtrack. Essentially limiting how much of a level a player has to have loaded at a time. GoW does this. You'll find a level split into short sections which once you've progressed, you cannot go back.

With an open-environment game, such as this, you can't close off parts of the level, so more of it has to be loaded to ram at a time.

I can assure you, that this situation will only get worse, as games push the consoles beyond their limitations. It's almost signalling the death of split-screen until the next Console generation is born and the benchmark resets.

That day is still along time away, so it might be worth simply investing in another console and LAN'ing or Online'ing it.

Looks pretty interesting but i'm not sure about the melee focus. If it was more of a shooter rpg like borderlands, i'd be quite a bit more interested

Speaking of modern split screen games... Borderlands pulled it off quite well. It's unfortunate more games can't incorporate a feature that was once a staple feature in earlier generations.

a used xbox on ebay nowadays is about the price of two new games, so im not too bothered about it not having splitscreen, as long as the coop is up to scratch. its alright to have splitscreen when the characters are tethered and there isnt an open world to explore, but i can see why they didnt think it was worth putting it in here.

Splitscreen would have been awesome for this game. its good to have a friend in a horror game. ive played resident evil 5 and left for dead and like having people to work with on splitscreen, it was easier and more enjoyable.
