LittleBigPlanet Cracks PSN In Half, Film At Eleven

Sackboy may look cute and cuddly on the outside, but he's really quite dangerous.  If you're the Playstation Network, that is.  MediaMolecule is already working on a LittleBigPlanet sequel, as just announced, but they might want to take a look at the just released original.  It seems that the online portions of the game have been, well, a bit lackluster, to say the least.  Aeropause has it all wrapped up in a nutshell for you:

I’d spent five or six hours over the weekend jumping joyfully through a few levels of the game offline and hadn’t even opened up the level making tools yet. Just being able to voice chat and make jokes with my brother James while we work together to reach some stuff out of reach to a single sackboy would be great. What I found was a nearly complete meltdown of the online portion of the game.

In the few days since the game servers were turned on, most of the online capabilities of the game have been ground to a halt.  The servers have been off and on sporadically.

My own personal experience has been mixed.  I got the game yesterday, and played offline for an hour or two with no problems.  (Well, I watched my youngest son play, our PS2>USB controller doesn't work with LBP.  Cha-ching!  Marc's buying more PS3 controllers tonight.)  Once the annoying pests, erm, my loving children went to bed, I fired up the online portion.  I was never able to join others for a level.  The game would freeze for up to a couple minutes when attempting to do so.  However, I could browse levels, and play them solo with only minor lag.  That's good, and the game never totally locked up, at all; however, I really wanted to get in some co-op.  Hopefully these issues will be resolved soon, and we'll all be able to get our Sackboy action on.  (That sounds way dirtier than it is.)

Yes, that sounds VERY dirty. At least we have the peace of mind that your children are in bed BEFORE the Sackboy action gets cranked up!

So...why is it that so many PSN releases (SOCOM, LBP, CoD4, etc.) have potentially game-breaking online issues right out of the box? I'm a proud Xbox 360 owner, but I have been a Sony fanboy in the past, and I'm just wondering why it seems like PS3 owners are always waiting on a patch...

Being both a 360 and ps3 owner, I'd say the crappy online experiences are balanced between both consoles.

On the ps3, you get these broken online experiences for games that are BUILT AROUND online functions. However, on xbox live, you get nearly a week of downtime for all games on the peak gaming week of Christmas. Then, a good amount of XBLA games launch with broken online functionality (mr. driller, anyone?). Seems like both have their share of problems, and they should both be equally embarrassed.

I can see the logic that when Live is down, all games are down, but I haven't actually seen that in practice, so I'll take your word for it. I got my Xbox 360 last year for Christmas - along with a copy of CoD4 and Halo 3 - and while CoD4 was having problems with the party function, I could still join friends' games without a hitch. I had no trouble at all for Halo 3.

Of course, that was one Christmas week out of three since the 360 was launched, so the people that have been around longer may have been burned worse in the past.

I hope it didn't come off as 360>PS3 as far as network issues go. I myself have very little experience with PSN, so I don't feel qualified to discuss it.

I really just think the game is extremely popular, and the servers are getting pounded. Kinda like how WoW will be here in a few weeks when the expansion launches.

What I don't get is how they are hit and miss with this. Warhawk and Resistance don't have major issues but SOCOM and LBP do. Then again, I'm new to Warhawk and Resistance online and don't know if they had problems at their launch.

so the very FIRST online game I play in LBP was last night when I hit QUICK PLAY from the main pod area and it hops me into a room from savannah theme with a couple other jokers that pop in soon after I do. Within 3 seconds of each of them dropping in they start smacking myself and eachother constantly to an annoying standpoint. I kinda hope they either implement a patch where you can disable yourself from being smacked and dragged but in turn it disables you from doing the same to someone else, or they implement that into the next one.

So... yeah...

Last night I could finally go online and play the player made boards, but Greg Miller at IGN was playing and he kept trying to invite me into a co-op game with him and three other people and for whatever reason, it would fail to connect to him every time we attempted it... So I'm not sure if everything is quite working yet, but at least I can connect and get levels.

I was surprised to see that the beta level I created was still attached to my account even though I had deleted the beta and its save file. Must be attached to my PSN id. I dont believe I am able to edit it at this point though.
