Call of Duty: Black Ops Co-Op Review

Review
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

The first thing that Call of Duty: Black Ops does right...is voice acting. In fact, production value overall is pretty staggering. Each voice in the stellar cast is distinctive, with the exception of the main character, Alex Mason. He (you) is voiced by Sam Worthington, who creates a believable tone...but he just can’t escape his generic timbre. Ed Harris, Ice Cube, and Topher Grace top the billing, as well as Gary Oldman, who returns to portray a familiar character first established in World at War. As expected, they deliver command performances and help to create interesting and memorable characters.

Roll that in with really, really original set pieces, and the groundwork is laid for not only a good experience this time - but an ongoing legacy that the studio could very well continue developing with future games. You’ll visit the swamps of Vietnam, a secret bunker underneath Washington DC, a jungle villa in Cuba, and even a grounded German cargo ship in the Arctic. It’s all loosely tied together in a way that’s difficult to follow but intriguing enough to keep you playing. Speaking of which - the campaign has a bit more length to it this time around. In all honesty I’ve only put about six hours into the campaign (which would normally put me past the end), and I estimate that I have about four hours to go. This is on Hardened difficulty; general consensus seems to point to eight hours’ length for the Recruit or Normal difficulties.

Remember the snowmobile chase in Modern Warfare 2? Take that concept, but with motorcycles. Or better yet - an attack helicopter. Remember that climb up the sheer ice cliff? Now put yourself underwater in Vietnam, coming up to slice the throats of Viet Cong in fishing boats. Black Ops is full of scripted moments that sound “meh” on paper but in playing are actually fun and immersive.

Which brings us to the second thing that Treyarch has impressed me with: lore. Whether you’re surviving a horde of Zombies or running through war-ravaged trenches - you can bet that each scenario somehow fits into a larger scope that has been hashed and re-hashed creatively. Many people will see Black Ops as an opportunity for Activision to reap a buck; many will see it as simply a conversion mod for last year’s Modern Warfare 2; Treyarch sees it as their baby, and has tried to make every edge fit into a huge puzzle. If Black Ops were a movie, they’d have succeeded in a mighty way; and where Infinity Ward has set a high standard for over-the-top action, Treyarch has injected Call of Duty with a fair amount of substance.

You'll gain appreciation for the effort put into creating characters like Frank Woods.

split screen online for MP is nice but why not in the combat training and zombie modes? i was on the verge of putting this on my buy list but with so little to do in split screen, it's a renter. it's a shame, i really like the campaigns in these games.

PS: nice review jim!

Thank you! And yes, that is a shame. Seems like for every good idea they had something missed out.

rented the game the other day and after playing the Combat Training vs bots i'm going to buy - plus Dead Ops looks pretty fun too.

I tried live mp last night and ended up quiting early because with what seemed like every few seconds an 'enemy rc-xd'. personally i'd prefer getting killed by a noob-tube rather some rc bomb car spammer.

Nice review.

I was sad that Iron Sites were not mentioned though!

Does the Dead Ops allow 4 player local co-op?

Man, another Call of Duty game, another reminder of how bad I am at Call of Duty games. At least in Halo I can live long enough to find out who is shooting at me and return fire. I still picked it up. I'm a glutton for punishment.

I have the PS3 version and it says that at the party lobby screen for Combat Training in the spot a second player would occupy.

I have the xbox version and I tested it last night. Combat training allows for two player split screen. I suspect it may even allow for split screen + online because it forced the use of a guest account for it since I only have one gold membership, but I did not test it.

NP. Just to be clear though, I'm only confirming split screen. I cant say for sure on the +online side, but I suspect it works.

I thought for sure that it was either/or for Combat Training - especially since you can choose your difficulty - but a YouTube search supports what you guys are saying. I'm sorry that I missed it; I didn't get as much hands-on time with Combat Training as I needed. I'll verify it tonight and make an edit.

You can do split-screen zombies, combat training and online multiplayer. I think you can also play Zombies online with a split-screen partner.

Also, on Xbox 360, the guest doesn't start at rank 1 each time. The guest starts at the same rank as player one with all the same equipment unlocked.

OOH! That is especially good news! I was concerned about that. This makes it much more worthwile for the guest account.

That's news to me! Thank you!
However, the progress is indeed lost once you log out.

Treyarch has taken to heart everything bad that plagued MW2. Here's a list of very subtle differences I've noted in comparison to MW2 gripes.

On Free-For-All, notice in the description in the menu that Tactical Insertion is disabled. No Tac-Del nuke boosters this time!

No more game-ending nuke. Attack dogs have returned, and the highest killstreak is 11. I've logged in 8 hours of multiplayer time, and I've noticed how difficult it is now to get high killstreaks. Aircraft can still spot you even if you have all the stealth perks, it's easier to shoot down the "Speedy Knife nubs," and the RC spammers are easy knife kills if you manage to stay clear of the RC's camera.

Player tags are now 100% customizable with many templates and emblem available only at certain ranks - AND you have to buy them just like you have to buy your perks, weapons, accessories, and camouflage. They have minimized much of the need to boost rank and encourage players to boost ranks.

And the stats! Holy crap balls! If you dig long enough, there's a Twinkie flatulence graph for each map. How much data on playing styles to people really need to know!

OH, and one very welcomed change. The PS3 menu options on Black Ops now have the features Join Session, Report Player, and Friend Request. These are features taken for granted on Xbox Live.

You can play zombie's in split screen I just did, online. All modes are available in split-screen coop online except campaign.

Also whats up with that analogy, I'm assuming you dont mean literal monkey balls.

For some reason my last message didn't seem to post...but

You can play every single mode in split screen online coop except campaign, I just did today. Zombies included.

Split-screen online is allowed in all modes, including zombies. I don't know why someone said it was "confirmed" not to be, but i did it today on my ps3, so i know for a fact that it's possible.

Wow. Looks like I created quite a scandal.

I've just dug through every mode with Gold, Silver, and guest accounts.
Looks like I'm eating my words and Treyarch's regarding splitscreen online for the Zombies.

Here's what I've got correct me if I'm wrong:

ZOMBIES
Splitscreen: 2
Online: 4
Splitscreen online: yes (2)

VERSUS
Splitscreen: 4
Online: 16+
Splitscreen online: yes (2)

COMBAT TRAINING
Splitscreen: 2
Online: 6
Splitscreen online: yes (2)

DEAD OPS ARCADE
Shared screen: 4
Online: 4
Shared screen online: yes (2)

If you have a second player logged into a Silver account on the Xbox 360 version, it will not allow online play. That's where I went wrong. My second player was my wife on a Silver account.

Plus Treyarch had previously stated via Twitter that splitscreen online would not be supported in Zombies nor Dead Ops Arcade, and was vague about Combat Training. This was after the game was ready for shipping.

Thanks for clarifying. This is the best split screen online support I've ever seen in a game.

When I said the guest will start at the same rank, I meant if you sign in on the actual guest account then it will be the same rank. Otherwise if it's another proper profile (not the guest account, basically) they will have their own ranking progress.

Sorry if I didn't explain it well before.

Smurphster your a difficult sell I take it, you started out stating you were just that ready to bite, then after your complaint is negated You are going to wait... lol I do agree though I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to share the AWESOME single player campaign with a buddy or 3.
Thank God Treyarch could clear the air, I was ready to Nuke EA for souring my MOH.

I'm with Smurphster...with all the similar background addons like Halo-Reach...why isn't there a 4 player co-op campaign yet for a modern warfare(no pun intended)FPS??? For the 360 at least....

I enjoy the game alot. Have been playing it for a few days, and have actually put in some good time playing co-op in zombie. Especially the pentagon level. And I can say playing split screen with a buddy and still playing on live with others is pretty cool. I couldn't get a second headset to work though. Im guessing only player one could use a headset.
