River City Girls 2 is one of the best beat 'em ups on this dying planet of ours. Since it launched at the end of 2022, the game has received some welcome updates that added 4-player online co-op and improved the combo system. Given that RCG2 already has cameos from Billy and Jimmy Lee of Double Dragon fame (and Marian is an unlockable character), fans have naturally suggested that the Double Dragon brothers should graduate to playable characters. Today, WayForward announced that it's going to happen!
The announcement comes alongside a teaser trailer that mentions WayForward's April Fools joke about "Bimmy and Jammy" coming to River City Girls 2 (see below). Everybody knew that was just a joke, but it was clearly intended to set up the eventual announcement of the real Double Dragons becoming playable DLC characters. Notice Marian's change of expressions between the April Fools image and today's announcement picture.
WayForward tells us that playable Billy and Jimmy will have their classic moves like the Cyclone Spin Kick and hyper, err, Rising Knee. They will appear in story cinematics and be voiced by the same guys who already voiced them as shopkeepers: Dan Avidan (Billy) and Arin Hanson (Jimmy). I would have voted for Jeff Luke from Double Dragon Neon to voice them, but nobody asked me. The voice guys will also sing a new song that comes with the DLC, a song written by Megan McDuffee.
Alongside the premium Double Dragon DLC, River City Girls 2 will receive a free update that adds "an all-new Double Dragon-themed motion comic, two new shops, new accessories, and more." Not bad! No release date has been announced for the DLC and update, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out more.
River City Girls 2 is a stellar beat 'em up RPG. It supports 4-player local co-op and 4-player online co-op on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and Steam. The Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch versions support 4-player local co-op and 2-player online co-op. All versions support cross-play.
The North American version of River City Girls 2 sells for $39.99 on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and Steam. The killer soundtrack is also available for $11.49 at Amazon and other digital music stores.
