Gal Guardians: Demon Purge (formerly known as Grim Guardians) is a fantastic Castlevania-style action platformer set within the Gal*Gun universe. The game features two teenage demon hunters fighting to save their school, so of course it supports 2-player local co-op. Following a digital release on all platforms, physical editions of Gal Guardians will soon be released on PlayStation and Switch.
In Gal Guardians, a mischievous demon has taken over a Japanese high school, turning it into a monster-filled castle. Two sisters who have been trained as demon hunters, Shinobu and Maya Kamizono, must step in to clear the demon infestation and save their fellow students. It's a perfectly anime-style premise that comes to life via numerous cleverly written in-game cut scenes.
While Gal Guardians looks like a Metroidvania, it actually plays more like a pre-Symphony of the Night Castlevania. The game is broken up into 8 stages, each culminating in an exciting boss battle. Our two heroines will fight their way to the top of the castle and face their demonic rival for the first time. After that, the protagonists gain new abilities that power them up and open up new pathways throughout the castle. It's hugely replayable.
In single-player games, one player can switch between both characters at will. With two players, each person controls a single sister. One fights with guns, and the other uses melee weapons. Their special weapons and traversal powers are totally different as well, so co-op partners will have to work together to explore every corner of the demonic castle.
The physical versions of Gal Guardians will be released in both standard and Collector's Editions. The Collector's Edition contains:
