Brink Interview with Lead Designer Richard Ham

Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo September 9th, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Our friends over at Colony of Gamers managed to steal Brink's Lead Designer, Richard Ham, for some candid questions about the upcoming 8 player co-op title.  Richard was deeply involved with Fable 2 while at Lionhead, which are always responsible for a deep gameplay experience.

They CoG Boys chat about the lack of female characters, working with a smaller studio and the type of gameplay experience you can expect from Brink.  With this and Borderlands there are some really solid Action/RPG Co-Op games coming soon.

Anyone interested in the sexy voices herein will be glad to know that the first one talking is me and the other one questioning Mr. Ham is Jeremy.

that interview started out kind of weird but very interesting. they sound like they're really into the game, that's good to hear.

Okay, I can see some rational for their reasoning, but I still cry bs on cutting female player characters from the game. I'm probably a bit more sensitive to this because I live with two female gamers, but it's greatly appreciated when women can choose to play as their own sex, instead of being forced to play male characters.

yeah, that seems kind of BS to me. i'd rather have fewer options for each gender than more options for one.

Uh...is this a good co-op game or will competitive MP be better than the co-op mode?

will disguise work in co-op?

Yeah, that is silly. I dont understand why more games dont do this. I know a few women who play Resistance 2, but they cant play as female characters (at least in the co-op missions...they did eventually release DLC for female competitive mode players).

Adding chicks is more then outfits. It needs new animations, models, sounds, ballence (it affects how easy a character is to see/hit.

In my more usual way. Stop complaining so you can get extra sex.

Also, what's wrong with touching wood?

What is this? Competative MP, they favoured online now the are pushing SP, what's going on?

The scenario he describes sounds like a Team Fortress fight to me. It will be interesting to hear about more features in the game.

I've heard the same reason for only having one sex from another developer before.

I hope there is split screen.

I call shenanigans on the female characters bit. come onnnn!

Good interview!

Split screen is something I am starting to want to see more and more in games. Just to be able to play with Biohzrd + Wife if anything else.

Only so many games you can stuff a female character into when they feature armies or commando teams that would realisticly be mostly populated by males. On the other hand, if they all wore big, bulky police suits like on the picture, it wouldn't be too hard to tack on a female head onto it.

Syphous at 03:35 AM on 9.10.2009
I don't even care that they cut female characters, it's not like they would have changed the game at all.

Nice interview.

Really good interview, I don't care about playing as a chick, but finding that he worked on the original Syphon Filter seriously made me a lot more interested. UK sounds like the spot for a game developer. The story rocked. Reminds me of the Elder Scrolls AI story of the paranoid King buying all the weapons.

There was also the cases of NPCs buying all the shop stuff leaving the player with nothing, and people walking around with armoured hats on.

Resistance 2 was a game that I had some favorite co-op momments of all time. I don't expect this 8 player co-op to be AS good, but still excellent =">

I never talk when I play online on COD. No one really says anything worth listening to, or no one talks whatsoever.
Part of me wants to crop the second picture you took, and add text. Something simple, like "Oh geez. . ." It's got the perfect f
