Xbox Live Support Ending for Xbox 1 Games on April 15th

News
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

It's somewhat of a shocking move, but probably a necessary one, Microsoft is ending Xbox Live functionality for Xbox 1 titles on the original console and those playable on the Xbox 360 through backwards compatibility.  For many, this might not seem to be that big of a deal, as that last time you actually played an original Xbox game was years ago.

Believe it or not there's a strong community still thriving in games like Halo 2, a game that doesn't have online co-op play.  In a letter about the announcement, Marc Whitten the general manager of Xbox Live, said "Halo 2 has had an amazing run on LIVE, with a dedicated community more than five years after launch."  Five years later and it still is consistently played every day by thousands of gamers.

On the cooperative front you'll no longer be able to enjoy Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Conflict: Global Terror, or Serious Sam 2 in online co-op after finding it in a bargain bin or a flea market somewhere.

Microsoft does have a good reason for this, and most likely it's because the continued compatibility with older titles have hindered future advancement with the service.  The original Live service's 100 person limit on your friends list has long been named as one of the grievances of subscribers, and at CES this year Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg acknowledged he wants to change that.

Who knows what other issues Microsoft has run into along the way while adding things like Facebook, Twitter, streaming music from Last FM and other various services.  In traditional upper management fashion Marc closes out the letter stating that "the best is yet to come for Xbox LIVE" - whether or not he's blowing smoke to ease the end of an era is yet to be seen, but Microsoft has a proven track record with their online advancements.

oooo, i'm loving the implications.

RIP XBOX. it was fun, but you work better as a media player anyway.

Time to throw out splinter cell chaos theory.

Anyone want to play some online Halo 2 co-op before April?

Also I do have Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, but never tried the co-op. (didn't know it had it). So if anyone wants to try and meet up. I'd like to give that a go as well.

i don't know if i can put myself through the misery again. i used to play halo 2 w/ my brother until he finally got halo 3. that switch is brutal especially if you use bumper jumper in halo 3. plus, most the guys that still play halo 2 are insanely good at it.

Halo 2 doesn't have online co-op.

Right, it also has split screen. Both of which should be unaffected.

hmmm... i wonder if updates will still be available. that would really suck if you weren't able to play system link because one xbox has an update and the other doesn't. we shall see.

I sure wish I could find one of those original headsets. Why did MS redesign them? Those old ones were so comfortable and worked well. Unfortunately they broke easy too, but I'd be willing to pay for new ones I liked em so much.

Guess we will see the extended friend list now since XBOX was holding it back.

Definitely looking forward to seeing what they can do to the friend's lists, now that the constraints of the old system are being let go.

i've got one collecting dust. pay me for shipping and its yours. i'll make sure it still works first.

personally, i never cared for the old ones. they always hurt my ears after a while. i like the new ones better except they're so damn fragile. i liked the mute button on the old ones though, except for that i'm colorblind and had a hard time telling if the LED was red or green.

as for the friends list expansion, i'm definitely excited for that. i really hope they add personal grouping and community grouping as well. that way i'll finally be able to remember who is from co-optimus and who randomly added me for no apparent reason.

It was bound to happen. This makes PlayStation's backward-compatible online support look better, but hopefully this is an opportunity for Live to be improved in its basic functions.

Its about time they pulled the plug on Halo 2.. Bring on the better friends lists!

This was holding back 100+ friends and clan support iirc. I find it funny that some people are getting angry about this.

JG, you're on for Chaos Theory co-op. I'll look for you online.

Wow Microsoft screws people over, who saw that coming???. Just think, at some point they are gonna cancel the 360's live support and all that DL content you bought will be gone. Its kinda like ripping people off.... But Microsoft wouldn't do that would they?

anyone have an in-warranty xbox?

blakepro

Does that mean if you could find a NEW xbox for sale, and then it went wonky, you could get it upgraded to the 360? Might be a cheap way to get on the 360 train...

right... but who's still selling xbox 1's? also, how would you break an xbox w/o making it obvious or voiding the warranty?

Wrap it in 5 towels and leave it on for 3 weeks?

maybe they will finally upgrade Live from a glorified matchmaking service to something that actually has dedicated servers. for once.

we're paying for it, afterall.

Clan support would be a nice addition, I really liked clans in halo 2 and it's sad that that's the only console game that comes to mind when I think of online clans. A bigger friends list would be nice too, I'm nearing the 100 limit.

you'll still be able to play games with system link online with xbconnect and xlink kai. if you're really bummed about your old xbox games, i highly suggest you check those two apps out.

Shazoo

i've used XBC along time ago with Halo 1 (pre halo 2 release) and it was horrible, I'm guessing there's been improvements to make it pretty seamless now? Guess the only problem on top of that is now you'd just have to watch for hacks.

--- Replying to smurphster -----They dont make consoles like they used to. I'm sure my old Xbox would still work just fine, if I one day decide to connect it and play some Spikeout: Battlestreet.

smurphster

yeah my original xbox is still going strong even after the abuse i put it through with modding it and such. i still use it as a media player sometimes.

@shazoo: they both work better than they used to but its still difficult to get long range connections. i haven't used either in a while but they worked decent enough when i did. plus, if you're just looking for a way to play co-op games w/ people here, you won't have to worry about hackers.

We should have like a co-optimus Halo 2 multiplayer meet-up before it shuts down, who's up for that? I know i am
