EA Server Shutdown March 2010 - LOTR Conquest, Army of Two (Asia)

News
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

Less 'service with a smile' and more 'servers with a frown', as the news breaks that EA are to close down more online servers on March 16th.  This is bad news for co-op fans looking to complete Lord of the Rings: Conquest, as this is the highest profile co-op game on the list.  For those in Asia, the closing down of the Army of Two online servers on April 15th will be a double blow - no more fist bumping for you.  Finally, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames on the PC will be given its burns notice.

The games that are being taken off the EA servers account for only 0.3% of EA games played online.  However, if someone has just bought a copy of LOTR: Conquest they will find it no longer works online in a few weeks.  Is this a tactic by EA to stifle the trade-in market as gamers will need to complete a game quickly to able to play online?  With LOTR: Conquest being released in January 2009, it only gives us 14 months to complete a game - is this a dangerous precedent?

If you have any questions of queries about the server shutdowns you can contact EA support and perhaps voice your concerns?

He's obviously missing his balls. I would think that in most game's case the servers shutting would not effect co-op as they could be peer to peer? I know in previous EA games they have forced me to sign in, therefore, co-op ain't looking good. I just worry that 14 months is too soon - what will happen to the likes of Fairytale Fights etc?

I was a tad disappointed upon hearing this about Conquest. I was actually just playing online last week trying for some of the multiplayer trophies, but only found one active game, and was unable to get any of them. Its a real shame. I can see them doing it if there is a newer version of the game and they want to promote it so people will upgrade (like the sports games, etc.) but not for a game like Conquest when its the only one of its kind.

Once this is done no one will be able to get the Platinum trophy!!!

Hopefully because of this news, people will flood the multiplayer in last attempts to get achievements.

May even be a good few weeks of good online play!

I got my Servershutdownophobia back... At least we can play the PC version in LAN with a little bit of help from a group (don't know if I can mention their name here)

Hmmm Funny I've played through Conquest solo, co-op, and online and I really can't see why so many hated it. Felt like Battlefield with swords, bows, and magic.

Too bad to see it go. I'd rather have them just knock it down to 1 or 2 servers.

I don't really see a logical reason for the shutdown. A reasonably designed server farm should be able to start and stop instances of any particular game server on demand. If it accounts for so little traffic, why not just let the game instances scale themselves back until people wanna play it?
