Remember Back When Sonic the Hedgehog Was 2 Player?

Sonic 4: Episode II harkens back to the good old days.

It’s back to the old-school Sonic 2 style that we know, as Xbox Live leaks new screenshots of Sonic 4: Episode II’s co-op gameplay!

Recently, the Xbox Live Marketplace uploaded a few screenshots of the upcoming title from the team up of Team Sonic and Dimps, which weren’t supposed to be revealed until later on this year. However, we decided it was necessary to fill you in on the newly revived classic co-op play that any Sonic fan would be eager to get their hands on. Featuring the beloved blue hedgehog, Sonic, and his trusty, two-tailed fox sidekick, Tails, Episode 2 will play much like it would back in the 90’s with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3, but with some modern additions.

The Xbox Live Marketplace description:

The Sonic 4 Saga continues as Sonic reunites with Tails for all new collaborative play! Following the events of Episode I, Metal Sonic has returned to form a formidable alliance with Dr. Eggman! To face this new threat, Sonic will have to call upon an old friend to help him save the day! Joined by Tails, utilise ingenious combination moves and race across four brand new Zones, in order to put an end to their evil plans! Play alone, or with a friend locally (and online), in an evolution of Sonic 2′s collaborative gameplay! Unleash Sonic and Tails’ devastating joint attacks and combination moves to fight the united force of Metal Sonic and Dr. Eggman. Episode II features an all new game engine, bringing you updated physics and an original graphical style as you race through four unique Zones and a new Special Stage.

With the addition of Tails, Sonic will have access to more transportation options than he ever has on his own. If anything, Tails will be able to utilize his main powers from past Sonic games, such as his main power of flying (as shown in the screenshots) or being able to swim under water (which Sonic completely sucks at). Being able to perform coordinated combo moves with Player 1 (Sonic) also sounds like a major co-op facelift to a video game franchise that could desperately use one. Fundamentally speaking, this is as classic a co-op mode any Sonic game will most likely recieve.

Sonic 4: Episode 2 is projected for release on XBLA around the summertime of this year.
