One thing is for certain coming into a game mostly fresh after a year - there is a TON of content available to play and unlock. It's both overwhelming and refreshing. We counted close to 30 available Escape maps to play, and that's on top of Versus and Horde too. There is PLENTY to do in Gears 5's multiplayer.

Gears 5 Gets A Full Release And A New Trailer

Naturally, the game has a full campaign mode dedicated to the men and women of COG and the aliens they're contractually obligated to dismember, but that's not all Gears 5 has to offer. As mentioned in the launch trailer, below, it also features a Versus mode (boo!), a co-op Escape mode (yay!), the perennial Horde mode (yay!), and a Map Builder mode (y...yay?). The trailer, while brief, does offer a glimpse of each mode in action.

Gears 5 Horde Focuses on the Heroes You Play

One of the key changes they're making this time around is to the characters themselves. Rather than just looking different, the character you select will have their own role within the team, passive and ultimate abilities, and default loadout. In other words, they're implementing some ideas/mechanics from "hero shooters" (such as Overwatch) into Horde. Marcus, for example, is a "Tank" whose passive ability allows him to regenerate his Ultimate ability (any shot taken by him or nearby allies while in cover is an automatic headshot) quicker by taking damage. Kait is a "Scout" whose Ultimate is to go invisible for a short period, Del is an "Engineer" that summons multiple DeeBee drones to target enemies and repair fortifications, etc. You can check out the official blog post for more information on the different characters and their abilities.

Lahni is an "up-close" kind of fighter, whose ultimate ability is an "electro knife" that shocks and stuns enemies and she has a passive ability where executing a foe may cause them to drop ammo (something you'll be scrounging for a lot, it seems).

[E3 2019] - Gears 5 Arrives This September With a New Co-Op Mode

The new co-op mode is called "Escape" and it will support three players locally or online. It's unclear if it'll also support "Combo Co-Op" - two players on one machine playing online with a third - though it was revealed after the conference that the PC version will be getting three player splitscreen co-op for this mode. Unlike the famous "Horde Mode," where players do their best to hold out against wave of foes, "Escape" forces you to always be on the move. The three playable characters - Mac, Lahni, and Keegan - are Hivebusters, COGs that intentionally get captured by the Swarm so they get taken back to a Hive and then they bust it up (bustin' makes them feel good!) by unleashing a bio-weapon. Of course, being in the middle of an enemy base means they'll have to fight their way out while keeping ahead of the green gas (and Lil Jon?)
