Sega Vintage Collection: Streets of Rage Co-Op Review

Vintage Ragin' on the Streets, Co-Op Stylee

Review
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

When XBLA and PSN were new and I was just a young man, full of vim vigour and a full head of hair, the download market was dominated by ports of older computer games; Pac Man, Golden Axe, even Streets of Rage 2.  Since these Halcyon days bigger, better, unique download games have dominated; Limbo, Castle Crashers, Braid. Sega have never been one to listen to reason and have released some of their greatest hits in a series of collections.  Sega Vintage Collection Streets of Rage is one such collection, is there room in this increasingly crowded download market for a loyal adaptation of a bunch of Megadrive games from the 90s?

The simple answer is yes!  The slightly more complex answer, would be yes, if you are a fan of retro gaming. Of all the adaptations, remakes, updates and ports, The Streets of Rage Collection has to be one of the most impressive I have seen.  Containing Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3, all the games are based on the original Megadrive/Genesis versions looking and playing like they did in situ.  The game offers single player gameplay, but just like the originals you can also play 2 player co-op, each game offering a slightly different selection of characters from your normal brawler type, a skateboarding child, a boxing Kangaroo and even….. a woman!

Each game is represented in a respectful way and just like with the original versions the games play better in co-op.  Any side to side brawler is more fun with an additional player on the screen and a few more enemies thrown into the mix.  Streets as a series is a classic example of the 90s brawler and any player who has yet to have a taste of this retro action could do worse than picking up this collection, but are three ports of old games really worth it? Are there other features?

Is there a way to save level progress? I bought Streets of Rage 2 on XBLA years ago, and you could not save nor use cheats for level select. Big disappointment.

Yup, it supports save states. You can save your game and go back later and pick up right where you left off.

Streets of Rage Remake pretty much makes this collection redundant.

Not that interested in this from a "retro" POV but would really like to see a modern day third person version, something like the batman games but two player co-op.

There are LOADS of co-op shooters these days in both first and third person flavours but no GOOD co-op beat-em-ups.

How about a modern version of these games NOT in 2D though or side scrolling.
Too make games like these better IMHO they need to be done in a batman type way so you can fight multiple opponents at once.

Streets of rage for a modern reboot...

OR final fight (was a more modern one BUT was rubbish), vendetta or double dragon (not 2D one shown)

I really enjoy my shooters and a big fan of rockysteady's batman to a lesser degree the captian america game BUT neither of these had co-op.

The watchmen games weren't good enough.

Sorry for double post here guys BUT my most wanted type of game at moment.

Any game's companies who read co-optimus please listen to this..

There is a major gap in the market on both xbox360 PS3 for a modern co-op beat-em-up.

Not in 2D. I use batman captain america as examples of how to modernise this genre.

Needs to be done like this IMHO to appeal to a modern audience.

Should have ideally split screen (couch co-op) online varietys of co-op.

All these games could potentially be done.

final fight
streets of rage
double dragon
vendetta
fighting force (PS1 or PS2 game can't remember)
Urban reign (PS2 released by namco, could have a modern updated version with proper co-op in main campaign NOT just 2 vs 2)
Tekken 6 (ps3 xbox) had a online co-op beat-em-up mode. Sadly wasn't much good. Didn't have a good control system as they tried to basically copy the one vs one system and bring it into a multiple opponents setting where it doesn't work and the AI wasn't great overall, mostly though it was the control system)

Thats my suggestions for potential updates/reboots.
