Buyer Beware - Couch Co-Op Issues Plague Borderlands 3 on PS4Nick Puleo

That said, IGN has shown in a video some serious issues that specifically plague the PlayStation 4 version of the game and its split-screen couch co-op mode. Everything from framerate issues, textures not loading, unreadable text and hitches in the action can make the game almost unplayable. Check out this video.

New for co-op players is instanced scaling, so you can join a friend regardless of level or progression and not be slaughtered by a swarm of angry midgets. Console players can enjoy split screen, combo co-op, and online co-op play while PC gamers will be treated to...uh...Epic Games Store exclusivity?

Breaking these down one-by-one, let's talk about the New Game Plus, or "True Vault Hunter Mode." After you've beaten the campaign on "Normal" (which you have to do), you can then play through it all again on True Vault Hunter. You keep your gear and stats, but none of the campaign progress. Enemies will be tougher, but you'll also be getting better gear, and really, isn't that what the game is all about? Getting better guns and watching numbers go up?

Although the picture below does include a very accessible way to review the minimum and recommended equipment needed for Borderlands 3, developer Gearbox has posted the full list of information on their website, which we have included below as well. It’s also worth noting that the game will be on Google Stadia when that service launches later this year and will allow PC players to enjoy the game regardless of their system’s specifications. The only thing needed is a solid Internet connection.

A few weeks back, Gearbox released a character trailer for Zane, one of the the four new Vault Hunters you'll get to play in the forthcoming Borderlands 3. They've been releasing a new trailer featuring a different character every few days since, and we've gone ahead and collected them all here for your viewing entertainment. Meet ...

This time around, we'll be spending some time with Zane, one of four characters brand new to the franchise.  He's currently in the throes of semi-retirement, having spent most of his life as a corporate hitman.  For one reason or another, though, he's decided to take up arms with the rest of the Borderlands 3 crew and spend his remaining days collecting absurd amounts of weaponry.

So, what was the "Celebration of Togetherness?" A new trailer featuring a bunch of shooting, loot chests, and the in-game characters prancing around to the Turtles' 1967 hit song "Happy Together." While it is, in my opinion, a pretty cool tune, it was a little disappointing that the developer didn't have too much else to say/show. Also, after having seen this, if I can't link arms with my co-op buddies in-game and prance around whilst wildly shooting my gun in the air, I'll be disappointed.

In addition to the general gameplay improvements Gearbox has made (such as sliding/mantling, better gunplay, and "combat arenas), the team has also focused on some key cooperative improvements. Alongside enemies and loot scaling to each player's level so you can play with buddies regardless of how high/low their level may be, Borderlands 3 will also include the following co-op friendly features:

Some Guns Have Alternate Firing Modes - in the gameplay demo, they showed off a Vladof pistol that could shoot regular bullets in a semi-automatic mode, or shoot "micro-missiles." Later on, they showed a gun that, in one mode, would  shoot a tracking dart, and in its other mode, would shoot bullets that would all go to the enemy
tagged with that dart. Some elemental guns will be able to swap between different elements so you won't have to keep one of each in your inventory and try to swap on the fly. Oh, and remember those throwaway Maliwan guns? Those have new abilities, too, like turning into a turret that runs and shoots at enemies.   More Environmental Interaction and Player Mobility - speaking of elements, some of those barrels you see and can shoot will react differently depending on the element of your gun. Water conducts electricity, oil can be caught on fire, and so on. You can punch barrels towards foes rather than waiting for them to wander near one, and players can now slide and vault through/over things.   The 4 Vault Hunter Classes Have 3 Different Skills - in the past games, each Vault Hunter had three different skills trees into which you could dump points to create your ideal build, and one "Action Skill" that was like your "ultimate." The former is still true in Borderlands 3 (each Vault Hunter has 3 skill trees), but the latter has changed. Hunters will have access to three different Action Skills and those skills can be further modified by specific upgrades. Each Hunter will also have something special about their abilities. Amara - a Siren - can change the element of her Action Skills while Zane - a "semi-retired corporate hitman" - can equip two skills at the same time, but loses his grenade. This should mean you'll have more flexibility with your particular build for a Hunter, and even builds that you prefer when going solo vs playing with friends [Editor's Note: Hey, Gearbox, if you're reading this/listening, please let people be able to save these builds and swap between them without having to do a complete skill point reset and point reallocation every time]   When Playing Co-Op, Enemies and Loot Scale to Everyone, and There's a "Lost Loot" Machine - got a friend that's a much higher level you with whom you want to play? No problem. You can join them in their late-game progress or they can join you and you both will be doing damage to whatever you're shooting at. Loot is instanced for each player and will drop at their level, i.e., if you just killed a level 50 enemy and you're level 25, you'll get level 25 loot, and vice versa for a a level 50 player killing a level 25 enemy. Speaking of loot, if you didn't pick something up, or it fell off a ledge into the void, it'll be waiting for you back on your ship in the new "Lost Loot" machine. Walk up, press the button, and anything you might have missed during your last mission/play session will get dumped out onto the ground.   Sanctuary Is Now An Interstellar Ship - as previously teased/promised, you'll be heading to worlds other than Pandora in Borderlands 3. Sanctuary, the city turned flying fortress from Borderlands 2, is your vessel for all of this travelling and all those familiar faces can be found in its halls. You'll also have your own "player quarters" you can modify and decorate to a degree.

So far, Borderlands 3 is looking like more Borderlands with a few improvements, which is pretty much all I wanted/expected, despite some of the weirdness around their post-launch content plans. How about you all, oh fans of the co-op? You excited for another visit to Pandora (and beyond) this Fall?

Along with the release date announcement, Gearbox also pulled back the curtain some on the co-op features. Specifically, player counts. Two player couch co-op and four player online co-op (along with a mix-and-match of the two, i.e., "combo co-op") is confirmed for the consoles, while the PC version will be four player online co-op only. You can join a friend's game regardless of character and story progression on either end and loot will be instanced per player. What's more, that loot will be level appropriate for that player. For example, let's say you blazed through everything and are at max level and join your friend who is still starting out. Your guns will be at your level and your friend's guns will be at theirs. What's more, you won't be steamrolling everything by being a higher level. Sounds like Gearbox will be normalizing enemies/damage to each player's level.

For now, there's not a whole of information out there, just the promise of "more to come" on April 3. I think it's a safe bet that there will still be four player co-op and, based on the Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, that it will support couch and online (at least on the consoles). Until we know for sure, though, we've only put down four player online in our database entry and just for PC (I'm sure it'll be coming to PS4 and Xbox One, but probably not Switch).
