Halo 3: ODST PAX Panel and New Trailer

Game Name: Halo 3: ODST
Co-Op: Yes - 4 player
Co-Op Type: Campaign or Firefight survival mode - 4 player online / 2 player splitscreen online
Publisher/Developer: Microsoft (publisher) / Bungie (developer)
Release Date: Sept 22, 2009

Bungie hosted a panel at PAX called -- what else? -- "Prepare to Drop", featuring some new Halo 3: ODST information and behind-the-scenes media. Bungie writer/author Joseph Staten stole the show, moderating and also providing the bulk of the information presented to an estimated 300 people in attendance.

Other notable figures on the panel were composer Marty O'Donnell, Lars Bakken, Curtis Creamer, and community manager Brian Jarrard. All too gladly they produced concept art, hilarious clips of the voice talent cast cutting up, and even samples of the dramatic new musical score for ODST.

Almost right off the bat, the team revealed a new enemy for the campaign and Firefight -- the Engineer. So far, we've only seen this Covenant baddie in the latest gameplay video and without any additional info, such as weaknesses or attack styles. Shooting an Engineer in the large cover on its back will trigger an explosion that not only kills the Engineer...but causes splash damage to nearby vehicles or foes.

Speaking of vehicles: two new pieces of concept art were shown, both of familiar machines retrofitted as civil services vehicles. The first was a Pelican that was colored gray and white, and the word POLICE painted down the side of it. The UNMC version's chin turret was modified to also accept cameras and spotlights. The second vehicle shown was an Elephant that was converted into a garbage truck, complete with The Superintendent's logo emblazoned on the side. There was no indication that either of these would be playable.

Throughout all of this, Staten explained that the inspiration for a the vast majority of ODST's texturing and lighting came not from previous Halo games, but from the film noir genre. At first, that sounded ridiculous, but after some comparison of ODST screenshots to classic noir publicity photos, you could see the resemblance. Marty O'Donnell's music preview -- a completely new, more jazzy direction (saxophones and all) -- confirmed it: this was a game very much inspired by noir. Bungie is seeking to depart ODST from the rest of the series in terms of its artistic presentation; after attending "Prepare to Drop", I'm convinced they can do it.

After previewing the music, the panel confirmed an addition to the voice cast: Nolan North, who was previously rumored to be involved with the project, does indeed play the character of "Romeo". You may know Nolan's voice from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Halo 3, and our occasional Co-Opticast bumper for In-Game Chat. Following that nice little piece of news was a gag reel from the recording studio, which included Nathan Fillion snorting at Tricia Helfer's forced excitement, and Alan Tudyk claiming to have scratched Nathan's iPhone in an attempt to get him riled up. The whole video looked like a lot of fun, and squared away our confidence that the music and voice acting was going to be a new bar for future Halo titles to reach (see what I did there?).

Before taking questions, we were treated to yet another interesting surprise: Fourth Wall Studios, the viral marketing firm responsible for the "I Love Bees" Halo 2 viral campaign, is implementing "Sadie's Story", a mystery within the ODST campaign that can be pieced together as a series of side quests (of a sort). Not much more information on this was given, other than that it could potentially add two hours to the game's 10-hour main campaign.

The last official note was an encouragement to pre-order for the Sgt. Johnson Firefight playable character. Staten made it very clear that once the game ships, only the pre-order codes will unlock Sgt. Johnson...no DLC nor in-game accomplishment will bring him into the Firefight battleground.

Finally came the fan questions! Some of them were strange, off-topic, and otherwise self-serving, but a select few garnered some committed information from Bungie. Among those answers:

-- The game will ship with 10 Firefight maps.
-- ...in addition to 24 Halo 3 versus maps.
-- The Battle Rifle was cut purely due to a lack of memory space.
-- The worst thing for Bungie to cut was a couple of Skulls that didn't make it into the final game.
-- Reaffirmed: no Elites anywhere in ODST.
-- Motion capture was never used for any Halo games, no plans to do so in the future.
-- DLC may be available in the future, but the team is too busy with Halo: Reach to focus on DLC for ODST.

So there's your Halo 3: ODST update, straight from PAX!

One last thing before we let you go: just before the ODST panel started, a new live-action trailer was released exclusively by IGN. Check it out below!

The only thing that I find interesting in ODST is the firefight mode but.. I have never really liked Halos anyway. Maybe this one will be different.

BigBadBob113 at 02:12 AM on 9.5.2009
At the risk of sounding like a moron, I just have to ask...what is the difference? Is it a new angle or something? Why isnt it called Halo 4?

Nuhru at 02:22 AM on 9.5.2009

If I have understood correctly.. probably I haven't.. but.. It's kinda the same story as in Halo 3 but you are playing as ODST. Well.. the story isn't the same but... the timeline is.. or.. it's the same war or something... so I guess it's a new angle... honestly I don't know but.. Yea maybe someone else should answer ._.

smurphster at 03:24 AM on 9.5.2009

lol... i bet they said it with completely straight faces too. i bet there are a ton of people on their forums who are really pissed off right now and fail to see the humor in that comment.

ODST's story is a tangent that branches off near the end of halo 2. it was only supposed to be an expansion but it turned into a much bigger game. so i guess two reasons, one is it happens between halo 2 and halo 3 so calling it halo 4 would not make sense, and two because they named it before it was a full game. also i would think halo 4 should have the same core characters and a new engine.

edit: that trailer is pure win. i wish more games would do trailers like that. it doesn't tell you much about the game but it really puts you in the mood and makes it a bit more real.

WOW... That trailer just gave me chills. You know, this game is the reason I'm getting an X-Box 360. I'm gonna wait a week to see if I can hopefully win the one you guys are giving away. But if not, I will surely buy one by the time the 22nd roles around ">

Mrxknown_JG at 06:42 AM on 9.5.2009
For a 10-hour game they can't have the Battle Rifle or a couple of skulls?

What the heck is going on with this game?

smurphster at 08:45 AM on 9.5.2009

guess that was over your head too... those were jokes. well, there's no BR but not because of the reason listed. there are definitely skulls but they're not hidden like they were in halo 3. the skulls are activated automatically in firefight.

txshurricane at 03:13 PM on 9.5.2009

It wasn't a joke, they really did say that eliminating a couple of the Skulls was hard to do, for sentimental reasons. Firefight uses the Skulls from Halo 3, but not all of them. They had to cut some.

kersplat12785 at 03:37 PM on 9.5.2009
Argh...why does ODST get "new" coverage every week when it's old hat. It doesn't do anything new, (or even interesting) it simply presents 8 yr. old shooter mechanics well. What's so great about that?

Mrxknown_JG at 03:44 AM on 9.6.2009
I'm going to play Halo 3 ODST, I won't buy. I've had too much trouble over renting Halo 3 that I won't even take the chance.

But this game looks fun and thanks for clearing that up txshurricane. Since they are using skulls from Halo 3 does not mean they are looking at your saves or they just have some of the skulls in the levels to find?

roland at 07:24 AM on 9.6.2009
That trailer was full of win.

I saw the rules for the ODST Omegathon play. It said that a new skull would be activated every...five levels? I couldn't tell if that would be like a standard feature to make Firefight get progressively harder, or if that was just an Omegathon rule.

txshurricane at 04:18 PM on 9.6.2009

It's a standard feature in ODST Firefight.

smurphster at 04:20 PM on 9.6.2009
@roland: that's how it always works. every 5 rounds a new skull is activated. i think its always the same order too

@jim: they really left some out? that's too bad.

@Mrxknown_JG: you don't collect them like you do it halo 3. they're just activated automatically. it doesn't matter if you found them in halo 3 or not. that's for the primary skulls at least. you can activate the secondary skulls on your own but i'm not sure if they're all available by default or if you need to find them in halo 3.

bapenguin at 04:22 AM on 9.8.2009
I just got to watch the trailer finally. Holy crap that was amazing.

Etanos at 04:37 AM on 9.8.2009
Nice trailer; too bad I probably won't see this for PC, lol. I always find it annoying though when they have extras like playable characters that are only available for preorders, and you have no option to even buy said extras later.

smurphster at 06:12 AM on 9.8.2009

there's no advantage to playing as sgt johnson... its just a different skin/model and voice. that sort of pre-order bonus i don't mind at all.

.Dylan at 06:52 AM on 9.8.2009
That new trailer is amazing, I NEED a Halo movie. Pleeeeaaaaase!

Zonf86 at 06:58 AM on 9.8.2009

I'm pleased the Halo movie got canned and paved the way for District 9!

smurphster at 07:03 AM on 9.8.2009

actually i believe someone is picking it up again.

mattism at 07:54 AM on 9.8.2009
What else can anyone say about ODST I already bought the game and that trailer was nice.

Tasark at 08:33 AM on 9.8.2009
I hope they pick that movie up again.

Torg001 at 09:54 AM on 9.8.2009
Now they are just taunting us.

blakepro at 10:05 AM on 9.8.2009
I've only played a little of Halo 1 so far, so I'm pretty ignorant here, but what is the big deal with no elites? does that alter the game dramatically?

smurphster at 10:13 AM on 9.8.2009

they are many people's favorite covenant race. i don't want to give away too much in case you do wind up playing 2 and 3, but they play a major role in the whole story.

blakepro at 10:44 AM on 9.8.2009

Okay, thanks. Yeah, I have Halo 1 and 2 and will buy Halo 3 when it goes really cheap due to ODST.

Its taking me a long time to play through it because I'm only playing co-op with a buddy and we dont get to play games very often.

QuackTape at 03:11 AM on 9.9.2009
Cutting elements because of lack of space? Sometimes I dream that Halo will come to PS3 just so we can see what Bungie had to cut due to lack of space. Maybe DLC will change that and we'll get the odds and ends they X-ed out.

COG_Network at 06:47 AM on 9.9.2009

i've always enjoyed the way the Halo franchise has been marketed...the ODST trailer is quite good...i just wish i liked Halo.

Heretic Machine at 03:15 PM on 9.9.2009
The Engineers were spoken of in the books. I also think they were originally intended for Halo 3.

I was at that round. I think only two skulls ever got activated, one at the beginning, and then one halfway through the round for the team that wholeheartedly won the round. They almost made it to the third skull, just based on the indicator on the left side of the screen. The other two teams only got the initial skull and failed out before the 5th wave.

I would be inclined to think it was special for the Omegathon because the second round used a custom version of Bookworm Adventures 2, and they were using dev units to play ODST. One of the units RRoD'd right before the round, so Bungie had to get a replacement unit from their reserves instead of jacking it off the show floor.

I would say that of all the panels I went to at PAX, this was my least favorite.

Yes this was good and I enjoyed the puns, I am starting to get a feel of the writers with their styles and puns are a favorite of mine so I hope to see more.

I am sure that my son will enjoy it.
