Dead Space: Extraction PAX 2009 Preview

Game Name: Dead Space: Extraction
Co-Op: Yes
Co-Op Type/Multiplayer Type:
Local, Drop-in/drop-out
Publisher/Developer:
Visceral Games
Release Date: September 29, 2009

Whenever a good game is ported to the Wii, we tend to ignore it simply because the Wii port won't be as powerful nor utilize the Wii's capabilities. Visceral games has taken their passion for co-op gaming, and applied it to the Wii version of Dead Space dubbed "Extraction. Dead Space: Extraction doesn't try to be a clone of Dead Space. Instead, it is a prequel to the series in the on-rails first person, complete with Co-op before the Ishimura ever meets Isaac Clark.

With the push of a button, I was able to join a single player game of Dead Space: Extraction, with access to all of the unlocked items the first player already had. We went through a cut scene with a new female protagonist, and went on our first rescue mission after the dreaded Necromorphs started trashing your ship. As with the first game, it's beneficial to incapacitate your enemies (blow off limbs before aiming for the kill shot) as you will be swamped relatively quickly. You're each given 3 stasis shots a piece that recharge over time, so to make the best use of that shot you should be alternating between both players.

As with the first game, there are a variety of weapons with alternate firing modes. For this game, there were 10 weapons to choose from. There is one for just about any style; flame thrower, rivet gun, hand gun, pulse (explosion) gun, and my personal favorite being the line gun (laser beam for properly de-limbing Necromorphs.)

Given the general audience of the Wii, there are options to help out the other players more or less based on their skill and yours. If your player 2 is struggling with ammo, you have the option to share ammo between the two of you, or you can be an ammo hog and keep it to yourself. Both players health is shared outright, so it's beneficial to pick up as much health as possible to heal your collective health bar (and share your ammo so your player 2 can help cover you.) Picking up health and ammo is as simple as hover overing it and clicking a button.

Unlike the House of the Dead style games, Dead Space: Extraction sticks closer to the survival horror side of the on-rails shooter. You'll get limited ammo and health items along your route, and the Necromorphs move a lot faster toward your location. Unloading on a single Necromorph is not a good idea, since there are usually 5 more immediately behind it. To balance your limited ammo, you're given a melee attack for those enemies that get a little too close for comfort - I used this often, but I'm also a sucker for melee in shooting games. Melee attacks are done in familiar Wii-waggle fashion of slashing the nunchuck attachment.

The horror aspects in this game were very well done with enemies popping out, mild hallucination with a voice in the main characters heads, visual changes, and lighting changes. I was wholly entranced by Dead Space: Extraction and the little bit of story we saw, enjoying every minute of my time with the game.

Aside from the straightforward Co-op story mode, there was an unlockable challenge mode for those that enjoy high-score races. This mode can also be played co-operatively for a combined score. These levels were based on the single player levels of the game. The other great bonus for playing through the game was the unlockable animated comic that was part of the game. We didn't get to take a look at any of that, but it was a 6 part mini-series that will fill in some more details on the series.

While Dead Space: Extraction isn't even the same style of game as the original Dead Space, it fills its own role nicely on the Wii. A producer for Visceral games told us that cooperative gaming is something that he absolutely enjoys, and they took special time and care with making the co-op experience in Dead Space Extraction as tight and fun as possible. After our play session with the game, we can't help but agree.

Well I'm getting a Wii when Monster Hunter Tri comes out, so you can guarantee that I'll buy this game then, and take a crack at it =">

Sounds interesting, I like on-rails arcade shooters. Just wish I could play co-op on the Wii.

Those necromorphs sure are gross!

It seems to be kinda cool but I don't like on-rail shooters that much so I'm pretty sure I will skip this one.

I like the sharing ammo option, more games need that feature.

The Wii is quickly becoming my in-home arcade with the amount of rail shooters.

I remember getting a sense of the Area 51 arcade shooter, but mixed with actually tense and scary elements.

Guess I'll have to pick up this and REDC.

It's nice to see the Wii getting some love on the more hardcore games that the developers actually put some effort into beyond the usual throwaway afterthought.

agreed, its nice to see some older audiences titles for the wii, I wonder if it will support the wii-motion-plus

I didnt like the Dead Space demo on the PS3. It just didnt feel comfortable for me. However, I am excited to try out Dead Space: Extraction on the Wii. I think the controls will actually work better.

Rail shooters? Why aren't they extinct yet?

this makes me miss all the time i spent playing rail shooter arcade games... i don't think i'd want to play one on a console though. if i had a chance to try it out, i might change my mind. we're going to wait a bit yet before we get a wii.

I might try to get this for my dad. Since buying a Wii last christmas he is almost addicted to playing it. Current game of choice is Zelda.

mattism at 11:32 AM on 9.9.2009
I might get this from my brother since he has a Wii and does not really have anything to play.

@Syphous - Kind of glad someone is carrying on the legacy. Had too much fun with the old GunCon games to write off the experience entirely. Crisis Zone arcade co-op was a blast.

Played the demo in co-op at the EA booth, the boss encounter against a Brute was tougher than in the PS3/360 version, and picking up items is harder because you have no control over the camera. Got a swanky t-shirt with the health bar on the back though.

Rail shooters are awesome! Its a great genre that can be casual or challenging, and is an easy way to get non-gamers to game. I have spent hours with either family or friends rocking through all sorts of rail shooters on the Wii like Ghost Squad, House of the Dead, and Resident Evil, and have loved them all.

One rail shooter in a generation is more than enough for me. I really hate that developers seem to be shoving them down the throat of Wii owners, especially since the console doesn't have a real lightgun. It is more like playing a rail shooter with a mouse.

Haven't played an on rail shooter in years.

I've got this preordered. I absolutely loved Dead Space and I have faith that the team can put together something great for the Wii.

I LOVE on rails shooters. So this is a definite purchase for me.

Thought I throw this question on here for different opinions, and if it was discussed already, then what's been your opinion lat
I'm tempted to get Halo 3: ODST and perhaps Halo 3 so I don't have to rent them any more.Hmmm choices....
