Half-Life 2 Synergy Co-op Mod Free for Steam Users Next Week

Jim "txshurricane" McLaughlin September 29th, 2008 at 2:01 AM

For all you elusive PC Co-optimus fans out there, we have a rare bit of news especially for you this time: Valve's Steam service will be hosting Half-Life 2 mods for free, and will be tacking on  Steamworks support for each, including stat tracking and automatic updates.

Among the first five hosted mods available starting next week is Synergy, the Half-Life 2 co-op mod. Play the award-winning campaign with friends!

Hit the jump link for the full quote from the Steam news post.

As a part of our continuing efforts to support the MOD community, we will begin hosting selected MODs directly on Steam starting next week. The first five MODs to ship on steam will be Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic. As always, owners of any Source game will be able to download and play all of these MODs for free.

Once installed, these MODs will appear in your "My Games" list and will receive automatic updates just like other games on Steam. Also, these MODs now take advantage of Steamworks, which provides stat tracking and tighter integration with the Steam community.

We're excited to see MOD developers get wider recognition for the hard work they have done, and we hope to support more MOD teams in the future. Watch for the official release next week!

you know what this means. They will know be able to see which MOD's people play most, then they'll go to the developer, make an offer, purchase it, make some slight tweaks, release another version to the public.....for purchase, and make the old versions not work right, just like Garry's Mod.

Is that so bad for the people who worked really hard to bring these to the public? I say enjoy them while you can for free, and then pay for them if it's worth it.

What do you think Portal and Counter Strike were?

hey now, I've purchased counter strike and versions of the game 4 times now, that should get me some credit for playing a free mod here and there. I just reinstalled synergy today and am eagerly awaiting the OB edition, which they've said already, will be free.

I heard they are also pushing a lot of HL2 mods on steam now this week. Honestly this is a great thing. It's so much easier to get stuff through steam. So can anyone download Synergy and let me know how good it is?

being the only real coop mod running on the HL2 engine, it's a blast, can't wait for S-OB to come out next week.

I'm interested in some co-op gaming, but so far I've only played it on normal and have not managed to finish any campaign online
Sorry to hear that, at least you won't have to pay for another one.

This site is so awesome. Im glad to be able to help reach that 2500 goal! I will definitely be telling friends about it.
More games should definitely incorporate co-op. Its not always enough to run around and shoot up teams or compete in a free-for-
My friend and I played some Resistance- Fall of Man tonight. Hopefully we will be getting Dark Kingdom for the PS3 by tomorrow s

How is the replay value of it?
Has anyone played this game yet? I played the demo, and it reminded me somewhat of "Zombies Ate My Neighbors" from the Genesis b
