On The Download Issue 27: Spring Fever

It’s true that the seasons are changing. Warmer weather is all around us, flowers are blossoming, and it’s nice to just get out of the house on occasion. What does that mean? This issue of On the Download will be addressing very portable iPad and iPod Touch/iPhone games for download, and cooperative play.

iPhone and iPod touch/iPhone (iOS) games aren’t something we regularly cover on Co-Optimus, but it’s still a lot of fun to check out what’s going on with the portable co-op world. We do have a full list of all 16 iOS games, let us know if we missed one. We do love iOS games that feature co-op through the 3G and wireless capabilities of iOS. Here are a few of the games you can take with you, and still play with others.

Rock Band iOS ft 4-player co-op. The portable version of Rock Band that we saw on the Playstation Portable called Rock Band Unplugged was less than ideal when it came to co-op. In fact, it completely unplugged co-op completely. Get ready to get your beat-game on with the iOS though, with full four player co-op and the following track list to enjoy:

· 30 Seconds To Mars - "Attack"
· AFI - "Girls Not Grey"
· All American Rejects - "Move Along"
· Beastie Boys - "Sabotage"
· Blink-182 - "All The Small Things"
· Blondie - "Hanging on the Telephone"
· Foo Fighters - "Learn To Fly"
· Foo Fighters - "Everlong"
· George Thorogood & the Destroyers - "Bad to The Bone"
· Jethro Tull - "Hymn 43"
· Joan Jett - "Hymn 43"
· Lynard Skynard - "Simple Man"
· Motorhead - "Ace of Spades '08"
· Pixies - "Debaser"
· Presidents of The United States of America - "Ladybug"
· Rise Against - "Give It All"
· Silversun Pickups - "Lazy Eye"
· Smashing Pumpkins - "Cherub Rock"
· Steve Miller Band - "Take The Money and Run"
· The Go Go's - "We Got The Beat"

Freebird is asking a little much, since the size of the game would double at the length of the song. Otherwise, Rock Band for the iOS sounds like a surefire win at $4.99.

Dungeon Defenders: First Wave gave us our first taste of the action adventure game that I’m highly anticipating on the Xbox LIVE Arcade. Play as various classes in a fantasy world, completing defense related quests with others and working with others to basically kick-ass up and down your block.

Next up is an iPad title that we also see on the consoles, as Call of Duty: World At War Zombies aims for the head with 2-player co-op. Call of Duty: World at War Zombies launched with the iPad, complete with HD update that brings those Nazi zombies to life, so you can put them to death with a friend.

Speaking of shooters, we’re back on the iPhone sized iOS games as Eliminate takes on the hordes of robots in survival mode. I hear good things about Eliminate, though I have not tried it for myself. Shooting robots on the iPhone could be a blast though, especially with at least one of your friends.

Want to go old-school with a fun side scrolling adventure with Sonic and Tails? Check out Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the iPhone. This one translates surprisingly well to the portable touch-screen, and is a blast to play with others just about anywhere as long as you have internet connectivity.

Not satisfied with the selections I’ve made here? Check out our full list of iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad games that feature co-op capabilities.

New in Download and DLC:

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime has new dev diaries, and has a release date of March 22nd. That’s today, or yesterday for those in a later time zone. Otherwise the only real runner up for DLC/downloadable news is Animales de la Muerte, scheduled for release on PC, XBLA, and PSN without a specific date in mind.

Not much in line for news on the Downloadable front, but we’ll take that opportunity to breathe a sigh of catching up. Good luck with all of your Steam sale carnage. I know you bought as much stuff as I did at their ridiculously low price.

Free For You:

Yes, I’ve cheated you guys a lot lately with the free recommendations - but here’s one for the record books. League of Legends is a free to play online strategy/Diablo-esque game that even has its own co-op mode. Unfortunately LoL is only available for PC. Perhaps someday the free to play co-op title will reach Mac users, or my PC will stop hating me.
