Impressions of Sol Survivor for the PC

The graphics for the PC version have been improved and definitely give the game a nicer aesthetic

A PC version of Sol Survivor was released via Steam and Impulse earlier this week, and this port of the XBox LIVE Indie Games co-op turrent defense title is more akin to a serious upgrade than a transference between platforms.  The first notable difference between the two versions is the graphics.  From the character portraits to the turrets and creeps, everything’s been given a thorough polishing.  Even the shadows of the turret and surrounding landscape now lengthen and move, as the sun on whatever planet you find yourself on rises and sets with the passage of time.  Aside from making the game visually more appealing, I've also noticed that there have been no frame rate drops when swarms of creeps are being pounded by a variety of turrets, an issue that was an occasional occurrence with the XBLIG version.  New to the PC version as well is the inclusion of a Survival mode, where you pit yourself against never-ending, randomized waves of creeps, badges that keep track of various in-game stats like the number of times you kill a creep, and Steam achievements.  All of these help to breathe new life into the title and give it some degree of replay value for those gamers that are interested in racking up the achievements.

Perhaps the biggest difference between the PC and XBLIG version, and the one that has some impact on the co-op play, is the inclusion of an in-game encyclopedia that can be accessed between missions, or even right in the midst of one.  This encyclopedia includes information about the various creeps, the commanders, and, more importantly, the turrets themselves.  Details ranging from a turret's type,  recommendations for how to use them, and how much damage they do at each stage of their upgrade are now readily accessible at any point.  This lack of information was one of our biggest issues with the XBLIG version, as it meant that players had to go through a good deal of trial-and-error to even gain an understanding of the different turrets and support powers and how best to use them against the invading creeps.  With the PC version and the encyclopedia, however, that information is now all readily available and it makes planning a strategy amongst your fellow commanders much easier.  The PC version also supports LAN co-op so you and your group of friends can maintain that feeling of "couch co-op" while staring into your computer screens a few feet away from one another.

The in-game encyclopedia provides all the information you need to help plan a solid defense

At $9.99, the PC version of Sol Survivor is a really great deal for tower defense fans and co-op gamers alike.  What’s more, it sounds like Cadenza Interactive intends to continue to provide support for the PC version and possibly even expand upon it as the title continues to find its audience.  This means there’s always the possibility that future enhancements could include additional maps for the co-op mode, an increase in the number of players on a co-op map, and, one can always hope, additional co-op modes (say, for example, a Co-Op Survival mode?).  For now, though, the enhancements Cadenza Interactive has made in this "port" have turned what was a good indie game on the Xbox, into an excellent PC title that can easily hold its own against the many other tower defense titles out there.

The Co-Op Experience: Planning a sound defense with up to 3 of your friends against waves of creeps in the Cooperative multiplayer mode is now easier thanks to the in-game encyclopedia.

Sounds interesting, but it also sounds like it would get stale after a while.

Just picked up the demo of this game per your review. Seems really run-of-the-mill for tower defense games; however, the coop makes it fresher. Definitely worth sub-$5, but the $10 that it's currently priced at is a bit steep. Hopefully the devs will lower the price. I also noticed that this game isn't listed in the "featured" or "popular" section of the indie store - despite the clear amount of work and quality that went into the development. This just goes to show that the devs need to have lower price points for these indie games if they want to get featured.

I've played the game for nearly a month now. And if I'm driving home and begin thinking of a new strategy for how to beat a certain map, the first thing I might do after arriving home is turn the xbox on and begin playing the game again. The initial levels are short, but later in the game, they are quite long, most taking around 20-30 minutes to complete (assuming you can hold out that long). And if you restart a level mid-way through, you could easily game for an hour without realizing the time flying by.

In short, it's a very addictive and fun game to play. It can be frustrating while you learn and get better at it, but once you get past the initial learning curve the gameplay is very satisfying.

My roommate would come home and I'd be playing, so he'd sit and watch for a while. Well, after a couple weeks of that, he got hooked too and has been playing it ever since. We did try the co-op wars mode once on split screen and I thought it was a lot of fun, but he didn't like the split screen (it splits it horizontally for some reason, so your view is really short and wide. There doesn't seem to be any way to split it vertically - which would make more sense in today's world where widescreen TVs are the norm). I don't have xbox live gold so I can't vouch for any other mode of play, but I am waiting for it to come out for the PC to enjoy all the multiplayer goodness. Whichever method you use to play coop with this game, it has the potential to be a co-op juggernaut, so I am really looking forward to that part of it for future LAN parties.

This isn't the most beautiful game out there, nor is it ugly. It's graphics are polished and solidly in the middle as far as graphics go these days (check out the level 3 lightning tower - it's badass!). It has a great soundtrack and the sound effects are good and generally appropriate for what's happening on the battlefield. For ten bucks, I think I've received plenty of value for my money. I've spent much more money for much less gameplay.

I've already won the game and am going through it again, playing random maps most of the time now. Since I can only play through one or two maps at a time (that's an average of 1 1/2 hours of play time), it's slow going for me, but wonderful fun.

It would be amiss for me not to mention that Sol Survivor has finally made its way to the PC. It can be purchased on Steam for ten bucks (or less) and sports a new, slicker user interface, new gameplay modes, and new maps. You can play through the campaign maps co-operatively with up to 4 players. There are also special co-op maps outside of the campaign you can play, and in "wars" mode, you play on a team of up to 4 players against another team of up to 4 players. In that mode, the objective is to send aliens or creeps against the other team - the same money you use to buy towers is used to send creeps. Meanwhile, the other team is doing the same to you. This gameplay mode benefits the player who builds less and sends more creeps, for with sending more creeps you increase your allowance per wave. Conversely, building more towers decreases your allowance - so while you have better defenses, you slowly begin to lose as your allowance shrinks and theirs grows - it's fiendishly clever and challenging! I personally don't like it as much, but mainly because I love building towers so much!

The graphics favor high-end hardware. On my Radeon 2900XT (now a 3-year-old card) putting "lighting" to high sends the fps down to the low 20s. But even at the middle setting they look so much better than they did on the XBOX. While you can still buy the XBOX version, if you have a PC you owe it to yourself to get the PC version - it looks better, is easier to play, has more gameplay modes, more multiplayer modes, more maps, and is the version of the game most actively in development and receiving fixes and updates.
