Gears of War 3 Co-Op Review

Grubs, Glowies, and Gears - A Bloody Trifecta of Awesome

Gears of War. The Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG). The Locust. Brumak. Immulsion. Dom Santiago. Marcus Fenix. These and many more have become signature phrases of the current generation of gaming, and for good reason: originally a glorified tech demo for the Unreal 3 engine, the first Gears of War mashed unlikely favorites Kill.Switch and Resident Evil 4 into a close-quarters shooter game that took off like a rabbit in a dog race. Six years later the series has culminated into a trilogy, and Gears of War 3 is not a bad way for Epic Games to show off their development skills and gamer savvy. Not a bad way at all.

Right off the bat, Gears 3 shows you it means business. Epic has dropped the trademark ”typewriter” menu fonts in favor of a more streamlined title menu - from here you can start your local, online, or system link party, check your unlocks and Achievements progress, change your multiplayer character/weapons preferences, or even delve straight into Horde or Beast modes. Choosing a mode of play (Campaign, Horde, Beast, Versus) takes you to a corresponding sub-menu where you can choose connectivity options. Your party is visible and editable from any of these screens.

Campaign progress is written to one of three actual save slots, but these are really just to save the weapons that your character is holding, your ammo count, and your checkpoints. If you lose your save file (as I did after Sunday’s pre-release title update) you can still start at the beginning of the last Chapter you were on, with the default weapons. For obvious reasons this can be life-saving, and it also answers the question of whether or not your co-op friends will keep their progress when playing on your saved game: they will, at least to the beginning of the last Chapter started.

The Campaign is a meaty 30 chapters long, and took me about 12 hours to complete on Normal difficulty. It’s a surprisingly hefty amount of gameplay, and a satisfying variety of scenarios to try in four-player co-op. I couldn’t believe how many different environments were showcased, especially in comparison to Gears 2, which I thought was pretty bland overall. There are a lot of subtle ways that Epic shows off the updated Unreal 3 engine, such as ashen statues that crumble if you touch them. And as far as controls and environmental interaction go: tried-and-true gameplay is here, with some tweaks such as player movement speed and the ability to tag enemies (in both co-op and versus), Battlefield: Bad Company 2 style. The story of Gears 3 takes a lot of elements straight from Karen Traviss’ paperback Gears novels without remorse, so don’t be too concerned if it takes a couple of chapters to catch up on what’s going on; there’s a lot to take in, and the game doesn’t slow down much.

I have to wait a bit longer, since my copy is being shipped from Hong Kong. I heard that for the versus games, dedicated servers are available. Cool if you like vs and hate lag, but I'll stick with campaign, horde and beast mode.

"...both players are required to have Live Gold subscriptions"

They desperately need money or what? Multiplayer should be free everywhere...

Technically, it IS free - just not on the dedicated servers. Multiplayer supports 2 players in splitscreen and 10 players via SYSTEM LINK (your favorite)...for free. So I guess you're out of complaints, then.

Since co-op has more players now, can you play splitscreen online simultaneously?

txshurricane - System Link is a favourite for everyone, because you can play for free there, and have a real blast, unlike online

*sigh*

Yes, but both local players have to have a Live Gold account.

It looks really good. I am bummed about the need for two gold live accounts. My Gears buddy only plays locally once every other month or so, so we will just be doing two player split screen. He doesn't play enough to warrant a gold subscription purchase.

little help dose it support splitscreen over system link too?

--- Replying to blakepro -----Sometimes a game comes with a 24 or 48 hour Gold code. I have two 48 hour codes myself at the moment, and will use them if a friend wants to try online.

You can play splitscreen online in Gears 2 as a guest of a Gold account, or with a second Gold account. Just no Silver accounts.

Hopefully they didn't do anything stupid like put in an achievement that only tracks your progress if you're online. *glares at Bungie*

Loved the first game on PC but I won't be in a hurry to go out and pick up a 360 to play this, esp if split screen online requires two XBL Gold accounts. Still hopes that the second and this third game with all DLC comes to PC.

I wouldn't count on a PC version for either game unless they do some sort of collector's edition with all 3, which is very unlikely.

It is a shame that online split-screen requires two Gold accounts when the previous one didn't. I suspect that was more Microsoft's doing than Epic's though.

Is there matchmaking in the various co-op modes? (Campaign, horde, beast)

Is there any mode this game DOESN'T support? At this point I think we've gone through every possible combination...

@SecretAsianManz

Yeah, I won't be holding my breath for a PC port anytime soon. But I won't be buying a 360 just to play Gears 2 and 3... it's just not economically sound for me. If anything, I hope they port it to PS3 as a complete trilogy. I'd say it's even less likely than a PC port but who knows? After Gears makes a butt load of cash for Epic on 360, they may want to milk it a bit more on PS3.

I got to play it with 2 player local 2 player online. worked like a charm. WHAT A GAME. Also, the splitted screen is perfect... its nothing like Capcom games or Halo.

Even if Epic wanted to convert the games for PS3 , Microsoft would not let them. Also, the split screen has always been the same in the Gears games... Every inch of the screen is been used. Halo games are still acceptable in split screen, but Lost Planet 2 (which I otherwise like alot) did it totally wrong.

And the lovely story goes on.....
Enemy variety ??who cares ?they all look the same !kill some ,move on , kill some ,move on ,kill some ,move on !!!
Gameplay improvements from the first two titles ?? NONE
Different weapons from the first two titles ??why do you want another weapon if you have the chainsaw gun ??
What about the music ??? FAIL AGAIN !!doesn't fit with the story !

I don't have an obligation to respond. I an disgruntled about the reviews, as well, even though I'm the person that wrote this one. But 1. I'm not staff anymore, and 2. your post is not as readable as you'd like to think it is. Do some editing and make your point a little clearer, and maybe you'll get something constructive in return.
