Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Co-Op "Ruined the Experience" Claims Infinity Ward

Let's face it, it's been a long time since we've known there wouldn't be campaign co-op in Modern Warfare 2. We got a short quote about how it didn't fit into the single player campaign, and that was that. We argued, and kicked dirt at the umpire, but really it didn't solve anything. But now we get a little more detail behind the decision from Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling.
“..it really broke the cinematic experience, took the immersion out of it, out of the story and the pacing and everything we’d spent so long crafting. It just ruined the experience we were aiming for, so we took it out, kept the single-player for that one player intact and polished it.”
Spec Ops was born from the good parts of the ditched co-op mode, Bowling said.
Now I like Infinity Ward, I really do, and they make an amazingly immersive single player experience in the Call of Duty games; but perhaps they just can't craft that into something two players can enjoy? It's not like it can't be done, with titles like Halo 3, Gears of War, and Resident Evil 5 showcasing an awesome co-op experience through the game's single player.
I would have liked to see them take the "leave it as an option" route though - something Treyarch did with Call of Duty: World at War. Was it ideal in the game? No, not at all. Was it fun? Hell yeah it was.
Thankfully it sounds like what we are getting in Modern Warfare 2, the 2 player co-op Spec Ops mode is going to be incredibly fun. VG247.com went hands on with a level and had this to say:
We just played a Brazilian Spec Ops level with Rob at a London hotel: it’s awesome.
From the looks of the latest GameTrailers.TV episode which unveiled some footage of the mode, there's going to be a good variety of gameplay in Spec Ops. The juggernaut looks particularly fun and will definitely require some teamwork and communication to bring down.
i'm definitely not paying full price for this game but special ops is really starting to sound like a lot of fun.

I won't pay full price for this game either, but I'll try to get it used through goozex.
Also, I would say to not bother picking this game up unless you are interested in the competitive multiplayer aspect of it (like myself) seeing as IW apparently does not appreciate or understand co-op.
exactly... that's why i'm getting a little excited about it (begrudgingly). still, i'm at the very least, waiting for reviews before i buy it. chances are i'll pick it up the first time i see it below $40.
@syphous - yes, we know, and agree.
I remember when I had a group of three friends over, we wanted to unlock Zombies in WaW. So, I switched to Easy, and one of my friends hopped in for some split-screen antics. I had more fun on Easy, messing around with him and letting him lead and have fun, than I did doing the campaign alone. Alright, yes, it stunk that Zombies wasn't local multiplayer on one XBox for four people. . . But we still had a blast getting there.
While missions designed for co-op are nice and all, I guess I'm still a bit disappointed. I'll be waiting for a size-able price drop, much to the anger of one of my friends that will, or assumes he will, be grabbing it on release.
When it started being more important for them to be considered ART.
If they are saying co-op would ruin the campaign, thatīs only because they didnīt find a way to make it good. It has nothing to do with co-op itself.
considering they messed up split screen in W@W, i don't find that hard to believe
However, without co-op through the entire game I won't be buying it period. So the lack of co-op has "ruined the experience" for me. A co-op "mode" is more of a slap in the face to me. They should've just focused on their single player experience for those who want that.
Hopefully they'll learn how to make a great experience two people can play together. For now I'm taking a pass. I only buy fully enabled co-op games. The one or two single player games I do buy have to be very unique and original to justify the time away from my wife... and this game doesn't have make the cut.
But seriously, I only play games to have FUN with FRIENDS. I can honestly say that there is ONE game I have seen the ending credits in single player. CoD:WaW, and I did that simply to get the Zombie mode so my friends and I could co-op play it! Then they opened it for all the next week... otherwise every game I have - EVERY ONE - I have finished only with friends. Hell, I rarely play ANY single player stuff anymore. I only have time to enjoy it with others.
So I'm really glad you posted this... I've been waffling on getting this. I was bummed they didn't have campaign co-op, but was placated with the Spec Ops mode. Now I'm pissed at their attitude. Screw 'em... no money from me. Plenty of other co-op shooters to get that are coming out. I hope they read this too... not that my money not going to them will bankrupt them, but sure as hell makes ME feel better as a consumer.
So why couldn't they have added co-op to Modern Warfare 2? Since there not giving a technical excuse, I'm gonna chalk this one up to laziness.
Great point!
I mean yea MW was cinematic and fun but come on its a war game its not ground breaking art.
Co-op expands the life of a game so much, I mean really how many times do we go back and playthrough a single player game for fun? Not many times unless your an achievement whore for me, but as someone said where did the fun go?
