What you see above is the first screenshot from the latest version of the Unreal Engine, the graphics engine that powers all games created by Epic Games, including the Gears of War series. In fact, Epic unveiled a trailer that shows off the famous Brumak walking through the jungle under some pretty heavy weather. It's quite impressive looking, especially running in real time.
Could it be a hint of things to come for the next Gears game? A co-op Gears in the jungle with foliage for cover?

If you've missed out on some of the great co-op titles of this generation on the Xbox 360, now's your chance to pick a trio up for around $40. Amazon is running a promotion that includes 36 titles, 9 of which are co-op games, at a buy 2 get 1 free price. Most titles are $20 a piece.
It might be a good time to snag Resident Evil 5 with the upcoming DLC coming out, you'd be able to own the Gold Edition for a fraction of the cost.

Cliff Bleszinski, of Epic Games, is promising an important announcement coming soon. Yes, yes, we get it: announcing announcements is irritating. But considering CliffyB's involvement in the co-op megahit Gears of War franchise, it's certainly worth mentioning. How incredible is this news going to be? According to Mr. Bleszinski:
"MEGATON FACE MELTING NEWS"
I was unaware that megatons had faces, nor that said faces could achieve a liquid state. That's rather impressive, to say the least. CVG predicts that this news will come at next month's Microsoft X10 event. More than likely, it will be the announcement of Gears of War 3, but will it release in 2010? Who knows, but in the meantime, let's all hit the gym, eat lots of beef, and practice swearing at each other. You know, just in case.

The 2009 co-op game of the year for us was Halo 3: ODST, but did it deserve it? Was there something social at play? A popular game or franchise is always likely to sell more copies than a new IP and as a result of this there are more people playing it, creating a phenomenon we call Co-opularity.

If the idea of a co-op story mode in Lost Planet 2 is not already enough for your brain pan, then a new trailer from Capcom and news about the release date may just cause your skull to explode like a headshot from a Longshot sniper rifle. The latest trailer suggests that the stars of Gears of War 2 may be making a cameo in Capcom’s alien opus. I always felt that the first game had a distinct lack of overly muscular space marines with potty mouths.

You gotta be hardcore to rock co-op like this
For every person, co-op has entered their lives in different ways and for different reasons. Some of us have had siblings that enjoyed playing together, others grew up with neighborhood friends. Some of us started in Arcades, others played Blades of Steel until 2am during slumber parties. Gamasutras Joshua Stern spent a lengthy entertaining blog titled "Go Team Co-op" discussing his life with co-op games. We want to know how co-op influences your gaming, where you got started, and why co-op is important in your lives.

Three more co-op titles have landed on the XBox 360's Platinum Hits list: Fable 2, Gears of War, and Halo Wars. While we weren't too keen about the way co-op was handled in Fable 2, it was still a fun game in its own right and there may be some potential for a "save file tie-in" between Fable 2 and Fable 3. Halo Wars provides a very solid co-op RTS experience on the 360, with each player controlling their own troops but sharing the resources as they fight off the Covenant forces. As for Gears of War, it offers the same co-op experience as its successor, with a few great moments of its own. Each of these titles costs $29.99 so now may be a good time to use some of those lingering gift cards you got from Christmas.

To round out a great co-op year, Game Informer took polls asking community members how they feel about specific co-op aspects in games, and asked a few key co-op developers how the co-op process works for them. Out of these community polls, statistics arose that made Co-Optimus.com very proud of the gaming community at large. For instance, 51.9% of all gamers surveyed responded that they'd rather play social games than single player. Of those social gamers, 64.5% of them prefer friendly co-op to competitive multiplayer.

"Ain't no candy here, ugly!"
Sounds like Epic is *ahem* GEARING up for a fun Halloween. The Gears of War 2 "All Hallow's Eve" event begins Friday morning, and will likely keep you glued to your Xbox 360 all weekend. The fifth title update for the game is available today, fixing some bugs and exploits. This weekend, XP earned in competitive multiplayer (the tricks) and Horde mode (the treats) will be doubled, allowing you to earn those achievements and the respect of your peers just that much faster.
Horde mode won't be the same ol' thing, though. How does "more Boomers" strike you?
