The New Twisted Metal Will Have a Co-Op Campaign, Plus New 'Broken' Video

Sharp-eyed tipster, Kevin Clough, recently brought some co-op news to our attention.  It seems that the new Twisted Metal game will have a co-op campaign.  In a recent interview with Game Informer, Twisted Metal and God of War designer David Jaffe had some interesting information on the co-op properties of the game:

Our single-player, our campaign – which you can also play co-op online or split screen locally – is deeper and more varied than any we’ve done... We have a great IP, great fiction, we’re going to have a great single-player campaign and multiplayer campaign, but at the end of the day this is a game you buy because either you love local split screen gaming with lots of different modes for 2-4 players, or you love going online.

Did he just say, "Local split screen gaming with lots of different modes for 2-4 players?"  Is Twisted Metal going to offer four player local co-op?  We certainly hope so.  A quick kick of my Google machine turned up this Twisted Metal information page from PlayStation UK.  You don't feel like clicking a hyperlink?  Fine.  I'll just quote one of the features for you; "Cause chaos offline in single player mode or speed into split screen action for up to four players."  That sounds like four player split screen to me, friends.  Amazon even lists the game's features as having "2?4 player split screen," whatever that means.

What we are uncertain of is the amount of players available for co-op play.  While we hope that the game will offer four player co-op (or more), we're listing Twisted Metal as a 2 player local co-op game and 2 player online co-op game for now, just to err on the side of caution.  (The four player local split screen mode could turn out to be a 2 vs 2 deathmatch, or something similar.)

We do know that sixteen player online combat is confirmed.  Players will join one of four factions; the Clowns, the Dolls, the Skulls, or the Preachers, and battle it out in different objective-based modes.  Twisted Metal is a PS3 exclusive and it is slated for an October 4 release, so we have plenty of time to bring you all of the co-op details as they become available.  We may even pick up a few at E3.  For now, here's a trailer with plenty of in-game footage.

-Thanks again for the tip, Kevin.

Wow, that's awesome news! I definitely didn't expect to hear that a Twisted Metal game would have co-op, but it will definitely make it a lot more fun.

Thanks. I saw it in the paper version of Game Informer and then I did a little work to track down the online link. This game wasn't really on my radar until I heard about co-op.
