Resident Evil 6 Announcement Video, Co-Op Confirmed

Resident Evil 6 has been announced, and as we had hoped, the game will support cooperative play.  None of the co-op details have been released, but we expect a minimum of two player local and online co-op, which was readily available in Resident Evil 5.  A new action packed launch trailer shows off some new enemies, locations, and one of the worst haircuts in gaming.  I won't spoil it for you here.  Click away!

Allow me to provide you with a little back story, which was provided to us by Cacpom:

It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President’s side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy, but when the venue suffers a bioterrorist attack, Leon is forced to face a President transformed beyond recognition and make his hardest ever decision. At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield arrives in China, itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack.  With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world’s population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left.

As you can see from the trailer, the franchise seems to have all but abandoned its horror roots and shifted towards a "stuff exploding and being bathed in awesome" vibe.  RE:6 Executive Producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, had this to say of the game's new flow, “From the outset the team’s intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers."   Dramatic horror?  Alright, let's go with it.

DRAMATIC HORROR!

We all saw Chris (awesome) and Leon (lame), but I counted three different protagonists doing their thing.  I may need to brush up on my Resident Evil lore - who was guy number three?  The gameplay seems to be ripe for cooperation.  Resident Evil 5's co-op was a real love-it or hate-it issue with fans.  We'll see how this plays out in the months ahead.  What do you think folks?  Sound off in the comments section!

Resident Evil 6 will launch on November 20th for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  It will be available on PC at a later date.  Co-op details have yet to be released.  We are expecting (at the very least) two player local and online co-op.

I had a great time playing RE5 in co-op, hopefully they'll improve on the experience a bit this time around.

We've all known RE6 was going to be announced soon, but confirming co-op was so awesome =D

I really enjoyed RE 5. I played through it once with my wife, once with my brother-in-law, and once on my own. I enjoyed the whole experience. I'm really looking forward to part 6. I'll still probably rip on it from time to time, but that's how I show my love.

Yay for co-op! Boo for not seeming like there is a butt kicking female lead. Unless you can play Ashley or that women with Leon.

In 241 it looks just like gears of war.
RE it's no longer a horror game. I think there's too much action, wich partly reduces the horror climate.
Although RE 5 was good (mostly because of coop play), i don't remember to have gotten scared at any moment, and i think this is loosing the essence of the game.

I'm hoping that they'll do away with the "must stop to shoot" mechanic. That'll make it more of a mainstream action third person shooter but I don't see that as a bad thing. I just couldn't get into RE5 because of the controls and making the game more action oriented rather than horror oriented might make it more accessible for people like me.

Same here, Mugsy. Even though I got over it eventually, the game needs to be paced just a little bit faster.

I was never able to get over the controls. They were just maddeningly awkward. I feel like if they did it similar to Dead Space then that could be a happy medium between the traditional controls and an action game.

Holy crap thats a long wait. But the melee moves looked cool. Mixing martial arts with gun play sounds good to me.

I tried the Resident Evil 5 demo, but it felt really slow, compared to what was shown in the video here.

1:17 - sidestep while aiming

1:44 - sticky cover

Rolling and sliding throughout. I like it!

I love that 6 is finally hitting, but I love even more that they didn't tell us a few years ago and then eventually release it. I hate that studios announce and talk about titles years in advance. Just make the game, give us a few months to prepare and release it.

Here's hoping the game takes longer to beat than RE5, played it soooo many times and loved it, but way too short.

Lets hope that he wasn't just coming out of the sidestep as he starts to aim.

Sticky cover looks good though and is a definite sign that the game is gonna be more action oriented.

I still can't see how this is about Leon and Chris kicking arse together. Both their stories don't seem intertwined. Still, if they say there's co-op and they update the control system, I'm up for it!

I agree with Pancho. Not really a horror game anymore. The eerie set and the puzzle solving was what I enjoyed about this franchise. While I support any game with co-op I am disappointed with what I saw as far as what I want the game to be.

Will wait to pass a final judgement though.

why does it have such a horrible graphics? is it to make it consistent with *horror* genre? I think prototype, 3 years old game, looked better....

I for one am absolutely thrilled that they've done away with "The Master of Unlocking." Those games were so ... horrorble. Scary for reasons that have nothing to do with immersion, and much more linear / less replayable as a result.

I was worried that RE6 not only wouldn't come out on PC, but wouldn't be coop. I have a feeling RE5 sold pretty well and people from a larger group than the ancient Resident Evil coven bought it and played it.

The inclusion of coop and the fact it came out on PC were the driving force for my buying it full price on launch day, and convincing my friend to do the same. And we haven't regretted a moment of it.

You know, I can imagine myself liking RE5 on PC... the faster response that a mouse/keyboard offers would probably help me get over my hate of having to stop moving to shoot. It would be like playing Gears of War PC but a little slower and with less ammo.

I cannot wait for this game, i have been praying for the RE game with both Leon(awesome) and Chris(not as awesome) together. I really hope these two meet face to face in this game, it would be an answer to my prayers.

Also, this whole "move and shoot" ordeal, really think about it. RE has been a stop and shoot game since it came out, it would be changing it to much. And it also makes the game more challenging. Seeing as you have to stop and shoot, its more likely you will get attack from behind and things like that. Instead of just running backwards away from the zombies and bosses as you shoot them.
