As 2017 (thankfully) draws to a close, we wanted to take a look at how Destiny 2 stands after some needed updates and the release of the first expansion. Games like these are ever-changing and shifting, but we wanted to put together our thoughts on it and try to answer the usual question that gets tossed about with this: “is it worth it?&rdqu...

Destiny 2 Seasonal Event, The Dawning, Kicks Off TodayJason Love

The Dawning event starts today, December 19 at 12:00 pm EST and comes to an end at roughly the same time on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. It's open to all players regardless if you own the recent "Curse of Osiris" expansion or not. There will be a special weekly milestone added to the list of activities during this time, and completing that milestone will reward you with a special Dawning Engram that can be redeemed at Tess Everis' shop for some Dawning-themed gear. In addition to the gear, the "Mayhem" variant returns to the PvP-centered Crucible, and players will find piles of snow in Strikes that let you hurl snowballs at foes and stun them.

The new content may be the equivalent of, say, "The Taken King" for the original Destiny, but what's added is good and needed. As Bungie said in their blog post last week, there are those folks that want to be able to hop into the game as they please and find something fun to do. The "Infinite Forest" may play into this by introducing "Heroic Adventures," which are tougher variants of the three Adventures that become available after completing the story. These variants include adding modifiers, like "Prism" that rotates through the different elements (Sol, Arc, Void) and increases the damage of whichever is selected and decreases the damage of the others. While the Adventures end in a section that is either the past, present, or future of Mercury, the path to get there is slightly randomized and constructed from pre-fab building blocks. It's something Bungie calls "intelligent assembly" (instead of the familiar "procedurally generated"). As this is the first week of its release, it's tough to say whether or not these Adventures will be rotated out every week, but it would offer a new/fun endgame activity for folks if they do.

If you've already picked up the DLC, either by buying it directly or via the Season Pass, then you can start pre-loading that content now. Fair warning for console users, you may need to free up some space. The DLC requires 88 Gb of space on the PlayStation 4, and 44 Gb of space on the Xbox One. That new planet and new guns need room, man!

The initial rumors that were heard last month were spot on and the only real new bit of info is the release date (December 5 for every platform) and the increased Character/Power levels (25 and 330, respectively). When the DLC arrives next month, players will be able to head to Mercury, a planet that has only ever been a setting for PvP matches, to take on new quests/missions, hang out in a new social space (the Lighthouse), play new Strikes, puzzle through a new Raid, and enjoy new loot.

We get into a bit about 35 minutes or so into the video, but one of the most notable aspects of this game over the original is how there are a few "one step forward, two steps back" kinds of things. For instance, the story/lore is way better and (actually) sensical, but the fact that they kind of force you through most or all of it before you can play specific aspects of the game (like the strikes), is really odd. Initially, I thought the Strikes might serve as more of a mini/starter-type raids while also providing story. They sort of filled the latter role in the first game. Here, though, they don't really do either as they are strictly limited to the Strike Playlist, the story beats are tangential at best, and with a couple of small exception, don't really show off the potential of what Destiny 2 delivers in its Raid. In their streamlining/focus on bringing about some quality of life improvements, something was lost along the way.

The main co-op focus for all of this seasonal news is specifically around the Clan Perks. Each week, members of a Destiny Clan can contribute experience points towards their overall Clan Level and unlock new perks, like better drops from Public Events or more credits earned for killing certain enemies, that apply to all members of that clan. Since the title launched last month on the consoles, the perks/experience have always been couched in terms of "this season," which implied that they would get reset at some point. With the announcement this weekend, Bungie has provided some more context, although no official end date for "Season 1" has been given. The developer also stated that players will have a chance to earn more experience (in order to earn more Bright Engrams) for themselves and for their Clan towards the end of a season with an event they're calling "Clarion Call."

News of the DLC first leaked out via a story from Jason Schreier over at Kotaku. From that, it was revealed that the expansion would come out in December and include a new social space (the Lighthouse), a new patrol area on Mercury, and the story bits would revolve around rescuing Osiris from the Vex. The listing on the Microsoft store confirms the story bits and adds that there are new weapons/armor/missions. It's probably safe to assume that the "new cooperative activities" bullet point in that listing will include a new Raid.
