Many of us put the long hours in; we sweated, we cried, we used bizarre alternative weapons. However, the fight appears to have been for nothing; indeed, resistance appears to have been futile as Sony announce the co-op friendly series Resistance: Fall of Man has no new additions planned in the future.
Zut alors! It appears that no matter which nation Amazon exists in, they always manage to leak information about forthcoming games. The latest Amazonian culprit is Amazon France. They have revealed that Sony plan to produce a pack containing all three Resistance games on May 16th. Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 all contained co-op modes.
Insomniac recently announced that the Resistance series has been concluded, with CEO Ted Price simply stating in an interview: "We won't be making any more Resistances." This may be disappointing to some of us co-op-minded folks, as Resistance 3 was a pretty solid co-op experience (we gave it a 4.5 out of 5). The good news, though, is that Insomniac will be focusing their efforts on upcoming Overstrike, another co-op shooter. What's more is that Overstrike will be available on both 360 and PS3 platforms, unlike the Resistance games, which were Playstation only. If Insomniac is planning on making Overstrike their shooter franchise in place of Resistance, then that would mean that more co-op'ers would be included, which can only be a good thing.
While we enjoyed the Resistance 3 campaign quite a bit, especially in two player co-op, we couldn't help but miss the co-op action that Resistance 2 provided in a more arcade like setting. Lucky for us, it seems Insomniac is on their way to somewhat remedying that with the latest batch of DLC.
Resistance 3 has been patched to version 1.05, which means the next time you fire up the game you'll be waiting for yet another download on your PS3. Still, with the patch comes several fixes for all aspects of the game including single player, multiplayer and of course co-op. The biggest fix is to one that could potentially spoil campaign progression for a guest player in co-op.
Resistance 3 was a solid game all around, with a full co-op campaign for two players both offline and online. But the third iteration of the series was a drastic departure in terms of co-op from Resistance 2; the second game had offered a eight player online co-op mode. Some folks were disappointed that this feature was missing from Resistance 3.
The Chimera have all but wiped out the human race, with what's left of the world forced to live underground and in small Resistance fighting groups. We jump into the role of Joseph Capelli and John to take on the Chimeran invasion and hopefully save the human race.
We can confirm today what we didn't know a few months back - Resistance 3's online co-op mode will require a Online Pass in order to function. An online pass is a one time use code included with new copies of the game. Because of this, the two player online co-op mode won't be functional to gamers who buy Resistance 3 pre-owned or rent it from online services like Gamefly. The game's split-screen co-op mode is unaffected by this.
Resistance 3 came out with a bang this week. We've got a gritty new launch trailer from PlayStation.blog for all of you PS3 owners who may be on the fence. There's some stiff competition vying for your gaming dollar this week. My suggestion? Start selling blood. Preferably yours.
There’s a lot to look forward to in Insomniac’s upcoming Playstation 3-exclusive FPS Resistance 3. For instance, the color brown! So much brown, the only way to express it in words is through song. But once gamers become accustomed to the superbrown, they’ll also have a whopping 59 Trophies to earn. The Playstation Blog recently published the entire Trophy list, which is full of spoilers and mildly clever commentary.
Here's a nice and cheery Resistance 3 video to brighten up your day. Especially if you're into the whole "young woman ruminating upon her own death" thing. If not, it's pretty damn bleak. There's a nice flavor of wasted helplessness mixed in with a minimalist black, red, and white color scheme. You get the idea. Almost any still from this video would be right at home on the cover of an old 60's sci-fi book.
The new trailer for Resistance 3 looks great, but man, is it bleak. It seems that Joseph Jacked-Up-Face has got to get to New York City to save everyone from some harsh weather. He leaves his family behind because, as he says, "We fight or we die." It looks like the option of fighting and dying never crossed his mind. Big mistake. We get to see some story elements and some fancy gunplay, as well as a Chimera who has spent a little too much time in the gym.
Sony is joining the online pass extravaganza that has joined this generation of gaming in an effort to slow down sales of used games. Like Electronic Arts and THQ, Sony's online pass would consist of a limited one time use code that would enable certain features in a game. If you rent or buy the game pre-owned you'll need to purchase the content for a small fee - usually $10.
The latest Resistance 3 Video Developer Diary focuses on two important components for a co-op game: enemy variety and enemy behavior. Sure, it's fun to adventure or run-and-gun with a friend, but it becomes so much more intense and immersive when you can encounter a wide variety of enemies, or when the enemies play smart (or cheap, depending on your mood at the time).
At Sony's booth during E3 2011 I sat down with the Resistance 3 Lead Designer, Drew Murray, for a hands on tour of one of the early levels in the game. We discussed Insomniac's shift back to more of the look and feel of Resistance 1 for the latest game as well as the more personal story it has taken on.
