Saints Row: The Third Co-Op Review

Unapologetic Chaos

Review
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

Flames erupt from my customized Peacekeeper as I jump over a gap in the bridge. The sleek car’s jet-black exterior reflects the nighttime city lights as I race through crowded streets. This is one of the first cars I 'jacked in Steelport, and it’s also my favorite. The stenciled “Police” decals are still faintly visible on the door. I  installed some purple highlights to mark it as a Third Street Saints ride. I’ve added some other features as well...

I earn respect as I drive through oncoming traffic, narrowly avoiding head-on collisions that could send me flying through my windshield. Kanye West’s “Power” is fading on the radio. It’s quickly replaced by Schooly D’s “ATHF Theme Remix” - why wouldn’t it be? As I drift through a turn my tires squeal but hold tight to the road. Like most of the vehicles in my garage, the Peacekeeper has excellent control. I’m not sure where I’m heading, but one things for certain, something is going to blow up when I get there. That happens when I’m around. A lot.

My cell phone rings. I’m told the Morningstar gang is trying to encroach on one of my prostitution operations. I could ignore it and do something else, but I really hate those guys. I follow my GPS to the front of a garish cathedral. Jumping out of my car, I let my vehicle careen at full speed through an intersection. I turn away from the sound of smashing steel and screaming people. The cries of the citizens of Steelport mean nothing to me, and they love me all the more for it.

Opulence.  I has it.

I quickly equip my 45 Shepherd pistols, old friends. One of the first things I did when I reached Steelport was fully upgrade these workhorses. They are as good, if not better than, most of my other weaponry. I approach the hated Morningstars, recognizing their black and red colors. The male members wear suits, while the females wear lingerie. Classy. It doesn’t matter. They’re all armed and on my turf. They are clearly hassling Zimo’s whores, roughing up my merchandise. My purple trench coat ripples behind me as I take aim at the nearest thug and fire.

The 45 Shepherds bark to life as I pull off head shots with precision aim. The merch runs for cover as the remaining gangsters return fire. I shred them to pieces and close the distance. My time in Steelport has hardened me. I’m almost impervious to gunfire. As I finish off the last thug more red and black cars arrive.  Lambs to the slaughter.

Instead of aiming at the gangsters I focus on their vehicles. My 45’s explosive rounds blow through the metal, causing the cars to catch fire. Morningstars dive from their burning vehicles - too late. The first car explodes in a windstorm of fiery death, instantaneously taking the other vehicle with it. A rocket soars by my head.  Someone’s shooting at me from behind. Oh no they didn’t...

There's no such thing in a Saints Row game

About the Whored Mode, that sucks. I'm guessing it was a last minute add-on. It's not so much the lack of rewards as it is that you can't play with the same character from the story. It's co-op right, not competitive? Cause balance should be a reason to keep players from using their characters when it's a co-op game.

Still, much looking forward to this. Though with a 5-10 day, I just may not get it until Dec. Crossing my fingers I get it sooner.

Edit: No problem Kevin, just did it for fun. An childish post for a wacky game.

Thanks for the review. Don't start with the whole first thing. I see that on other sites and I think it is ridiculous.

Really looking forward to this one. Have my character created and ready to start it out tomorrow while the kids are at school.

On a different note, I wish you'd put the review score on the first page. When I click on a Co-Optimus review, the first thing I have do is skip to the last page to check the score. Please bump it up to the front page of the review!!

We just spent hours upon hours writing a review and digging every detail of the game we could. The least you could do is SKIM the review for us.

That said - if you really only care about score, just look to the right - it's always in the Co-Op Game Details box.

yeah, the co-op details box always ruins the ending to a review for me, I like reading them and seeing what they got, but now I always see ahead of time. Still enjoy the read though, gonna try this during a non skyrim weekend.

I actually never knew that was there. If a game is good enough for me to want to know the score, then I'll read the review first because at least I know Co-optimus won't spoil the story for me unlike some other sites that like to give away the big moments.

Again, great review and thanks

Well, I just think Mrxknown_JG is one of those people who read the last page of a book before they start it. Those people exist, and they still do read the book...

Anyway, great review Cubninja. I was debating on whether or not to go to the midnight launch to pick this up....I think I might.

I may have to get this sometime, even though I never played the previous 2 games. The gaudiness doesn't do much for me, but you can't beat full campaign co-op.

Until they publish a reference explaining the scoring criteria, it's not going to do you much good, in my opinion.

It's funny, I don't have that much trouble understanding the reviews at all. I read all those letters before the score, look at the score, and say, hmm, that fits.

--- Replying to bapenguin -----Me too Bob. It's not THAT complicated, Iron Sights. I have been here for a while, long enough to know what y'all will like in a review and how well my views fit with most of the editors, especially Andrew. Generally speaking, the last page of Co-Optimus reviews are all I need.

EDIT: spelling and rewording

Yeah, that's all changed/changing. The scoring system is being unified so that the database is more consistent. It makes perfect sense in that aspect, but don't expect each particular reviewer's methods from six months ago to still be the same.

That said - if your tastes are in line with Andrew's, then you probably won't feel it. Anyone who was more in synch with mine (if there ever was anyone) would have, I think.

The scoring reference is linked at the bottom of every single review.

Thank you! Where is the guide for the half-steps?

Most folks don't need that spelled out for them too.

Most people don't need a score at all. Just looking for consistency here.

Thanks for the great review! Def seems like an awesomely playful and chaotic game! I'm wondering whether we should do 2 first since it's on my list or skip to this one. I remember you guys mentioned some co-op issues with only one player having the objectives show up on his/her map in 2...

This discussion has made me think about how I take in the reviews here. I usually do click through from the graph on the home page so know the score, then skim to the last couple paragraphs looking for the discussion of the co-op specifics. Though of course I read (and appreciate) the whole review eventually, I usually already know a fair bit about the single player experience from standard reviews elsewhere.

There's good reasons that you couldn't just dive into the co-op talk from the first paragraph, but I do really like the way this review used those triple bullets to break out the sections, I wouldn't mind seeing more of that to help me spot the info I'm most interested first...
