Dead Island Co-Op Review

The zombie genre is not dead.

Review
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

Dead Island is great. Go buy it. There. That was easy. Oh- You want to know why? Well I'll tell you. Dead Island is a very good open world zombie survival game featuring a robust weapon crafting system and first person melee combat. It’s positively chock full of bloody undead chunks. As a single player experience it's fun (really fun), but not amazing. There are some minor flaws that keep it from becoming something truly special. As a co-op experience, Dead Island overcomes these flaws, nay, it strait up curb stomps them into a soupy red goo. Dead Island is one of the best co-op titles of the year.

If you’re playing Dead Island solo, you’re, as they say, "doing it wrong." Four players can get together in the undead sandbox of Banoi and transform a survival horror game into an all out action gorefest rife with zombie butchery. While my dreams of chucking zombie children off of hotel balconies may go unfulfilled, I did encounter a zombie near a cliff side. I shot him with my modified electric gun, broke one arm, chopped off another, embedded my poisonous machete in his head, lit him on fire with a Molotov cocktail, and finally kicked him off the side of the cliff. I then had to hop down that damn cliff to retrieve my "Toxic Military Machete." Purple text weapons don’t grow on trees, you know.

I hate saying that a game is a cross between game X and game Y, but writing this review is keeping me from Dead Island, so I’m going to do it anyway. I'd have to say the game reminds me of Borderlands mixed with your bloodiest zombie wet dreams and then infused with a healthy dose of first person, panicked, flailing, melee combat. There’s also hints of Fallout 3 in the game as well, both in terms of the RPG elements and the ridiculously gory violence. Top that all off with some gratuitous potty mouths and you’ve got a recipe for one Dead Island and a very Mature rating.

Sam B came here to drink beer and clobber zombies.  And he's all out of beer.

You'll begin your adventure by choosing one of four characters. Each has their own special abilities you can enhance through three skill trees. The trees have the same titles across all four characters, (Fury, Combat, and Survival) but their individual skills vary greatly. Sam B is a blunt weapons brute. Logan is a weapon throwing pro. Purna is the firearm specialist, and Xian is a master of edged weapons. Anyone can use any weapon, so long as they meet the level requirements. Each character receives bonuses for using certain weapons. For example, Sam B’s first combat skill adds 5% damage to blunt weapon attacks.

I chose Xian in my first playthrough. She’s a nimble hellcat of a blade expert. Her Fury skill is a super powered knife assault. When activate, she can pretty much one shot almost anything in her way. Her Combat skills focus on edged and poison weapons, while here Survival skills focused on getting a higher yield from Med Kits. I tinkered with the other three characters, and they all have their own distinct abilities.

Your main mission is to survive and get off a beautiful tropical island that has become utterly zombified. Seems simple enough. But as is the nature of open world games and zombie apocalypses, there are scattered NPC’s who want you to do stuff for them. These missions have a lot of variety. You’ll be fixing a truck, looking for lost items or people, turning on this, making that, all while hacking, slashing, stomping, and bashing your way through the zombie hordes. There is even the occasional escort mission, and unlike every other escort mission ever, these don’t suck.

Too bad this game doesn't have split-screen... seems it would have been great to play it!

I've read it in a lot of places that this game has System Link/LAN. And I hope so, because then I'll be a very happy zombie slayer.

I have only one question - Can we play as the same character in Co-op? Because if not, then we'll have to choose carefully lol

EDIT - Too lazy to Google, but I Google'd it up and everyone says that "Yes, you can, but it's not recommended, because the characters help each other out, mainly with their strenghts that may be the other characters weaknesses"

We'll cover all the ins and outs of co-op in a Dead Island FAQ later today. We didn't include them here due to space limitations. If you have questions, ask away. We'll be sure to answer them.

Great Review, Question can you start a campaign with four players at once, or do we all start a game at the same time then jump into one world?

Sounds like a cracking game - Gears 3 looks like i may have a challenger for co-op game of winter 2011!

Agree with seshat in that split-screen would have made this a winner. I liked Borderlands in that my bro and I could adventure around Pandora together. It wasn't proper open world but it was big enough. This would have been a nice alternative to the very brown Borderlands.

They really need a good open world split screen co-op game on the PS3.

Sounds awesome, so glad that I got it reserved. I kinda got the same impressions from what I've seen of it too; that you shouldn't play it alone.
I really love Borderlands alot, so this should be interesting to play and see how it compares because alot of people seam to making that comparison.
I'm also really digging on the unlimited space for parts since weapons have to be maintained. I'll deal with the fact that you can only carry 12 weapons too cuz I think as much as it sucks it'll be a learning exsperience to prioritize things going on in the game and get me used to focusing on details and thus I'll get better at the game quicker.

Okay, then I have a question - If the game is completed, is there a Skirmish mode or Free Play or something like that, and also is it Co-op playable?

Thanks Andrew for focusing on what's right with the game rather than on the flaws.

Like we said, there's very few flaws and what is there are only technical and don't take away from the experience. We did only play the console version, and I hear the PC version has a few more technical bugs, but a day one patch is expected on all versions.

This game far exceeded my expectations. It's simply so massive and satisfying, violent and beautiful.

My biggest unanswered question concerns how the characters help each other. In Borderlands, for example, the Soldier can buy Cauterize which lets him shoot teammates to heal them. They all have class mods which buff team skills. Is there anything like that in Dead Island?

bapenguin

There are skills that give the group bonus money and XP.

So they're really focusing on the survival aspect. No magic healing bullets or some other nonsense. I like that.

did they send you guys a special, unbroken copy or something? every other review ive read has said the game is fun, but there are so many technical flaws and so many gameplay elements that aren't quite right that the game is pretty disappointing.

I basically bought a 2nd xbox for this game, so if we dont have a good time with dead island im gonna track you two down p

I don't know. I put about 15 hours in, Andrew between 30 and 35. Other than a few graphical things here and there and a network hiccup, things seemed to be fine for me.

For the most part whatever we did encounter didn't take away from the experience.

Sorry, no game gets a 5/5 co-op score from me unless there is both online and couch co-op.

Great review - thanks. Sorry it's not clear to me how the story progress is part of the coop play. When I start a game and want to play with a friend from the beginning of the story can we do so (like in Borderlands)? When my friend leaves has he to play the whole thing thru again in solo to get the same story progress like the host? That would mean every player has his own story progress and can only jump in another ones game for leveling up and gathering stuff? That would be quite disappointing in my book. And what about achievements? Does only the host get the achievements or do all players get them (the 'normal' ones, not the coop achievements of course)

Man, Joystiq did not like it. I'm trusting Co-Optimus to have a review more in line with my personal wants and needs of a video game.

Joystiq seems to be in the minority, TeamXbox gave it a 90, GameInformer and GameTrailers each gave it an 85, IGN an 80... and now Co-Optimus a 4.5(5)/5. It sounds awesome to me. Plus I love me some zombies.

"Go Buy It" are really really heavy words. Words that I could re-gauge my opinion of this sites opinions, if the game isn't so hot. " Go Buy It and Play Co-op" is something I say for L4D, Gears, Portal 2, and Hard Corp.

So Co-Optimus. You have piqued my interest. This is a year in which I do not have time for all the games and I have to make drastic cuts. This was one of the cuts based off of the trailer I saw in which a dull game was played out with repetitive dialog such as "I set you free" said over and over. But if you say "Go Buy It" then this game is now back on my radar.

May I ask what version of the game you guys played? It sounds like the Steam version has some serious issues, to the point where they think they accidentally released an old build of the game and not the retail version! lol

@Syphous We played it on Xbox 360. I have over 40 hours of game time in and I've seen only a few bugs, and none of those were game-breaking. Heck, they weren't even game-hindering.

lol... where did you read that? that sounds like speculation to me. developers can pretty easily confirm what build is out there. either way it sounds like they were rushing near the end. hopefully the patch helps!

i've been tempted to grab this game but there are so many great games coming and so little cash in my wallet . this review is doing a good job of pushing me over the fence.

Yeah, I read that in the comments of Ars Technica's review, which was very, very harsh, though it sounds like many of Kuchera's problems may only apply to the PC port. I sure hope that's the case, anyway, since the PS3 version is already wending its way towards my mailbox!

My gilfriend wants to play dead island with me and i need to know how can i make that happen. is there a way i can play with her online through a system link or does dead island allow two players on the same system on online play like black ops or what? can someone help me with this

I watched a 4 player co-op play video on youtube and it made the game look quite fun. The guys playing were making a fun game out of it regardless which was awesome. It looks like a good game to go crazy in. It kind of reminds me of Rune. Anybody install and play the 4 player Co-Op hack of Rune back in the day? This looks like it could be fun like that game was. Single player doesn't seem to appealing to me on Dead Island.

I don't get the hate towards this game with some other reviewers. Games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout can be far buggier than Dead Island, yet they get GOTY while Techland gets bashed. This is especially true with some user reviews. I was reading Metacritic and most of the actual written user reviews are quite positive. The few bad ones have no logic to them. "The weapon and leveling system is far too simple and quite boring." Really? How's that any different from something like Oblivion or Borderlands? Seems like people watched that first trailer and assumed way too much.
